I have a question - and am interested in opinions....

If you have an un-spayed bitch and she comes into season - should you walk her in the local park? If yes - would you walk her there for the whole of her season (23 days I think?)

I was talking to my sister the other day and she has a very differnt opinion of this to me - so I just wanted to see what you lot think...

Another reason i ask is I have a 11 month old boy lab puppy who is entire and a girl we see in the park in the mornings has an entire bitch - who recently came into season. She still goes to the park every day with her dog and exercises it off lead. I have chosen to walk my pup elsewhere for the time being, as a result.

I would never walk an in season bitch through a park with lots of other dogs about. Especially off the lead.

When Beastie came into season she was exercised on the lead, late at night around where I live to ensure chances of her meeting an entire dog were slim. There is no way I would risk getting her pregnant by some random horny dog!

Well that was what I would think....

I did say to her - what would you do if a stray dog mounted her - it could be aggressive if you intervened... She was a bit dismissive of it...

And poor Loki's hormonal little mind blew - he didn't know what to do (luckily for me

) So I have decided to avoid the situation... but really it's not fair on the male dogs is it? Or am I biased

My sis says that it's surely up to the male dogs owners to ensure they don't let their dogs mount a bitch in season... And clearly i would never let Loki do that... but it really affects him - for days afterwards (brain descends to balls

as he is going through a very hormal time and hasn't yet learnt to manage his hormone levels)... I thought she was a bit irresponsible really...

I think it's very irresponsible. Especially if she was dismissive about it as well! I wouldn't fancy trying to get a dog off my bitch if it mounted her (Although Tina and Beastie both soayed, Cindy will be too after her first litter)

Good thing Loki doesn't know what to do yet, bless him

I agree....I wouldnt risk walking an un-neutered bitch, I couldnt stand random dogs trying to follow me home...but then the chances of me owning a one is Zero.....if the bitch is on a lead and an un-neutered dog pestered her and tried to mount her...then that is the male dog owners fault/ignorance.....so it goes both ways.
If a dog tried to mount my dog/bitch, neutered or not....it would get a swift boot from me

CALA I agree - but if they are walking it on the lead - they might as well keep away from parks where other dogs will be playing off lead? It seems a bit unfair to tormet the male dogs with the scent of a bitch on heat if they can avoid it. And on the roads my dog would be on a lead anyway so the problem wouldn't be there.

Mounting is just bad manners

if the dog is neutered or not in season (although Loki didn't try to mount the in season one either).

That's exactly why I walked my late at night and nowhere near parks etc as the male dogs would go nuts!

Mounting is bad manners!

It really annoys me when people let their dogs 'hump' things cos they think it's funny! No, it bloody isn't especially when the damn thing insists in gonig for my leg!

they just let it though... so I usually bark at it - which does the trick

Totally wrong to take a in season bitch out where males will be. MHO.
When mine had her last season I only went across our road onto the green for her to do her business clean up & then back in. The local landlords dog was on my doorstep for 3 weeks trying to get to her & he lives behind a great big hall wall so that is how determined he was to get to a hot bitch.

Also when they are in season their bodies go "soft" so they don't require as much exercise as when not in.

I have heard that feeding fruit vinegar to a in season bitch can stop them from giving off the scent?? I wouldn't like to rely on it though!

When my bitch was in season I only walked her on a lead in places where there was little chance of meeting any loose dogs, she has the garden to run around in. I also covered her in 'bitch spray' to cover the scent just in case.
