Has anyone experienced this...

We’ve had our lab for about 6 months now. As some may remember from previous thread- owners never neutered him (or did anything with him for that matter! He is 3) and as he was a bit nervy the vet suggested to wait or even not at all.

He is quite good with other dogs, despite a very limited life before we got him. But.... he is obsessed with both my friends neutered males (one an old lab and one a spaniel) Constantly wants to sniff them, wines if separated. Takes no notice of my friends young female who has not yet been neutered.

It’s really strange! Has anyone else experienced this? After a while- they are often at the horse yard at the same time- we separate him from them as it must be irritating. He will only briefly be distracted. Unless there is horse feed to steal!

Tbh, if he is only sniffing, I would leave the dogs to sort it out themselves. Obviously if he starts trying to mount them, that is a different matter. He is probably trying to work out how to be a dog around them.

He never tries to mount them. I think part of the issue is that they are both quite old and submissive so don’t tell him to stop. Although we met a younger neutered male on a walk and he was obsessed with sniffing him as well.

It may be worth having the older dogs prostates checked if he does not do it to all castrated dogs

^ this!

My entire entire terrier is like a urinary tract infection detection machine.

However, he does generally like a good innocuous sniff as well. It can absolutely just be behavioural, and perhaps he feels safer or more familiar with the two dogs he knows well, so he feels he can take the liberty without getting told off.
