So....a friend has purchased a horse from NI, should have been on it's way by now. Transporter, a well known usually recommended company have insisted he gives an EOIR number before they move the horse which is now being held in god knows what conditions. Despite telling transporter that the horse is purchased with personal money as a personal horse, nothing to do with his business, he understood that he didnt need am EOIR number and that should be provided by the transporter as the agent moving the horse.

Yet, they are still insisting on this number! Online it states he doesnt need a number, the transporter should give theirs as the agency moving the horse. But no....still no movement.

If he puts it through his business, there are obviously tax implications and other implications and requirements, but it is a personal purchase this time not a business one.

Does anybody know 100% how you can get this bloody number separate from your business? Really shocked at this well known transporter who has previously brought loads over for his business but the minute its a personal purchase it seems to be "computer says no".

Nothing on line says as a personal purchase you need the EOIR number?

Trying desperately to help him find out as horse is being held :(

Could the issue be that he booked the transporter through his company and paid for transporter through his company.? Therefore understandably transporter has to treat it as business purchase.

He might have to provide number for sake of horses welfare and try and sort later.

No he paid from personal account as personal purchase. Address for business and personal is the same...I feel maybe this is the issue?!

If it’s a personal purchase you definitely don’t need an EORI (I’m a customs advisor 😁) but i can understand the transporter being confused. At the end of the day, it isn’t the transporter’s responsibility to ensure VAT has been paid, it’s to ensure the correct paperwork is logged and the VAT is between your friend and HMRC to sort out

I think your friend needs to get on the phone to the person asking for the EORI number and explain clearly that this is a personal purchase. It's likely an admin assistant that is just following a process/ticking boxes. I often need to explain things verbally to export people as the written word is often mis-interpreted.

Or value the horse at £1 and give the EORI number of the business for the sake of the horse getting 'home'.

Any 'well known transport company' will have professional holding/stop off yards so I would be less concerned about the care provided.

I was told that I needed one when I moved a horse from UK to Spain earlier this year. There are so many challenges getting horses through the border that I just went online and got one - it really wasn't onerous!
