We have a 5 year old Mini schnauzer x mini poodle that we got last August. She has had several fits since we have had her. She had about 4 over a 3 month period, one in January and then 3 in the last 4 weeks. Most of them seem to be triggered by some kind of stress i.e. heat and lots of exercise, the change of home, staying with my dad overnight. They last about 10 to 15 minutes. She tenses up and shakes. She is conscious sometimes, sometimes she needs to sleep other times not. She has been to the vets who did blood tests - all normal. Just taken her to vets today who advise to wait and see if the fits continue to be as frequent as recently or if she goes another 6 months without one. Has anyone had similar experience? If so, what frequency did they have fits before they started on medication?

My friend's dog got medication after two fits and has been on it ever since, he is about 3 and lives a normal life with no fits.
But were not stress triggered.

(Just finished reading somewhere else about some Krazy Kolor GSD 'breeders' in the UK KNOWINGLY breeding from and linebreeding to epileptics and dogs that are known to throw epilepsy, why on earth would you put people and their dogs through this horrible condition knowingly, especially just to produce 'cool' colour *headdesk**headdesk**headdesk**)

MY girl has epilepsy (the one on the left in the siggy) and is not on any meds. She had her first seizure when she was nearly three and I can honestly say it was terrifying for me to watch. My vet recommended doing nothing to start with but for me to keep a notebook and note all her seizures. I was to keep note of date, time how long the seizure lasted, how long the post-ictal depression lasted and any circumstances around the seizure. She has settled into a pettern of having a seizure about every six weeks. They seem to be getting milder (she does the full on grand-mal full body, eyes rolled back thing) and the depression shorter. I am not going to put her on any meds unless she gets significantly worse. Other than the sezures she is a very happy, healthy dog.

My last ESS had epilepsy his were triggered by heat.

He was 8 years old and had about 10 fits altogether before he was put on medication.

My vet said just watch him and if he was in a position that he could hurt himself to pull him to a safe area.

He was PTS at the age of 12 when he ended up with bad arthritis.

There are a number of good websites that are very helpful.

Thanks for your replies. i wonder whether the heat is triggering them atm. i shall take her back to vets if she has many more in the next month or two.
