I was just wondering if anyone knew what could be making the fuel guage on my lorry wave like crazy while we are driving. It occasionally settles so you can see how much is in the tank but I was just wondering if it was a simple problem that could be fixed or if I should just live with it as I can still check how much is left in the tank :D

Thanks in advance :D

Think it may be an Iveco thing as mine does that too. It was described to me as it gets all excited after getting a wee drink!! However, I like your description too.

My mechanic says cost of investigating and fixing it will outweigh the cost of playing "how much diesel in the tank game":D:D:D

By the way ask Figjam..... We have a "quirky mobeel club" Horse Lorries and Older 4 X 4's that tow horse trailers are well fully paid up members!!:)

Thanks FC, will ask FJ.

Might have to join the quirky mobeel club but hopefully this is the only fault!

WK, I suppose a dodgy speedo is better than fuel guage, would be awful to run out of fuel and knacker the pump!

Not sure its that bad, if you look at it before you set off you can see the level of fuel and occasionally it has a pause so you can see the level. Mostly its crazy though!

Might just ignore it!

Uh Oh AF you're now doomed in the lorry owning department:p:p

Never ever say that and never even think to yourself one week " oh lorry is running great everything is fab".....guaranteed something no matter how minor will either stop working, fall off, stick or break!!:)

Will bear that in mind! I did say 'hopefully' so as to reduce bad luck!

:)Message to Trudy - please please be a good truck, I do like you very much and I would be very happy to give you a daily hug if it will keep you on the road forever :)

Ours has a speedo that just stops every so often and goes back to 0 and then after a wee while it works again! My bf had a Citroen with a dodgy fuel gauge and we just had to learn how many miles a tank would do as you couldnever trust the fuel gauge!! I didnt always mange it though much to his disgust/fury!!!
Q

When does it get erratic? All the time or when it's stationary/moving or near empty/full/all the time?

I used to have a Peugeot where the fuel gauge would start to waver as it got emptier as it was simply an older style of fuel float that moved around as the fuel did. I got to learn exactly how full/empty it was by the amount it wavered.

my fuel gauge says i have more fuel in the tank when i arrive at the show than when i set off ??? Very frustrating as i never know how much i have got. Sometimes i will be driving along and all of a sudden it drops so quickly :(

Seems to do it all the time, once the key is turned and lorry starts its off like a crazy thing!

every once in a while it pauses (at the level of the fuel I think - although I am now getting paranoid!) then starts again!

We did drive the lorry up from Essex which took 9 hours (taking a detour to collect a horse on the way) and it did it the whole time and we refueled when it paused and we could see it was 1/4 full so I guess it is accurate when it pauses!

Most likely thing is that the guage has worn out and there is no "damping " on the needle. A simple fix. Certainly more simple than running out of fuel on the motorway with two horses.

Most liklely a simple fix !!! the tank sender in the tank has a float and a track with contacts on it when the lorry is moving the fuel sloshes round and after a few hundred thousand kms the track thingy wears and makes contact intermitanty, so it becomes epilectic :D new sender and about 20 mins to fit .....

True, but the tendency is for this to show only at certain levels of fuel rather than all the time. The easy way to check is to disconect the lead from the sender unit and go for a drive, if it still leaps around it is probably the guage, if not ,change the sender first.

Have you had the fuel tank replaced at any point? Gauges don't like being fiddled with and can be very sensitive. Some react to vibrations, others to slippage.

We had our rank replaced and if we were going downhill it showed 1/4 tank more thank if we went uphill!!!! I regularly drive off the red! :o

This is why I never let mine get below a quarter full - the only time we have "broken down" was from a lack of juice . . embarrassing . . above a quarter it is quite well behaved, but the oil pressure needle is a bit epileptic to start with.

Also have the speedo that goes on strike if you go over a big enough pothole, drops to zero until you stop at a junction, then it picks up again. Luckily it's quite easy to tell the speed from the engine noise or degree of rattling :-) Apparently previous owner did once get a speeding ticket though!

It is Trudy's way of telling you not to run the fuel down on to the red as you used to do with your old lorry!

You can play guess the fuel.... I can play guess the speed!

;)
