Hoping someone can help me.
I am pregnant so horse is off work, vet told me to keep up oil intake so he is having one mug a day, plus happy hoof, saracen releve and vit e/selenium.
I think it is due to Spring grass coming thru but he has turned into an idiot, he has decided he is frightened of everything, even his rug being taken off. Normally I wouldn't care but I am frightened he is going to run into me ( pregnancy paranioa!)
Any suggestions on any calmers an Epsm horse can take or anything else I can do
Thanks

Being off work will predispose him to this condition, ideally he needs to be at a constant low level of activity. He doesn't need that much oil and would probably be better on a fibre only diet if he isn't doing much.

not just me then. I think it just be the grass coming thru then. As soon as it dries out a bit we can section him off a bit, but it is just too wet at the mo!
Will have a look at those calmers!
thanks

he is off work because I am pregnant, I was advised by vet and osteo to give him time off so allow any muscle damage related to the epsm to heal. Osteo said muscle damage takes a full year so......
Also he is a bloody pain when anyone else rides him, tends to buck/rear/p*ss off, plus I have done everything with him and don't want someone else ruining him.
He only gets a handful of the saracen releve, to make sure he eats. Vet said to keep giving the oil as his body need to be in the habit of converting it to energy?
thanks

yeah I remember that feeling, then when baby arrives it scares the hell out of you if it is the first, this tiny thing relies on you for its life!!

So glad you realise you MUST keep feeding the oil even if he is not working, Really a true EPSM horse needs more than one mug a day, Beacon has 550ml ...

Sorry but both your vet and physio are wrong about giving him time off/ If you are doing it for the baby that is different and your choice. Giving an EPSM horse no exercise is the 2nd worse thing you can do, the first being to stop the oil.

Dr Beth who is the world expert says exercise is as much part of the treatment as the diet

Like I say tho, if you are doing it because of the baby then I FULLY understand that you and baby MUST come first.

Hope all works out for you xx

Hi Beaconhorse
I have no experience of babies whatsoever either

so should be fun to start with.
I am giving him the time of due to being pregnant as he is too unpredictable to ride when carrying precious cargo, but I was told to rest him in case he had underlying muscle damage that needed healing (because isn't it correct epsm can be caused initially by an injury that then damages the muscle?)
I could always start lunging him gently a few times a week maybe?

have a look at the new winergy feeds. the highest oil one with no cereal starch (o better than releave) is calle equilibrium growth.

i go on about them all the time cos they are so bloody fantastic. promise they wont make your boy any more frantic, calmer if anything. winergy will work with your vet to make sure he has the right amino acid profile to build muscle and correct work regime to start converting oil safely.

good luck with your baby.

Hi, I too am pregnant and have an EPSM horse (prone to tying up) I am still riding though as she is very sane but nearer the time when baby is due and after birth I am planning to keep her exercised by lungeing and other ground work rather than her having full time off. Hope all goes well for you, baby and the horse - would be interesting to hear how you get on!

Very good point raised, haha. I feel at the moment that mine may take to football the way he is kicking about - but then I am sure every mum-to-be thinks that at some point ...
