can anyone help me with my EPSM questions!!
My horse has been diagnosed with EPSM and has been on the hi oil diet for 27days....She was given a diet sheet from the vet according to her weight which was 528kg and she has to consume 530ml oil a day.
Luckily, getting the oil down her is no problem as she's pretty greedy...
One of my questions is: Is the 530ml oil a maximum amount or can I feed her more if she will have it? or is it bad to feed more for any reason...
Secondly, I have a question regarding the exercise.....I was told to keep her regularly exercised but I am not sure what that really means....Does it mean I have to work her through the symptoms when they flare up or stop at that point?
I have basically been hacking and lunging her for the past 2 months...she has been generally improving well with the odd setback...she is certainly far better than she was a month ago...But I'm not sure whether I have been doing too much...I pretty much stuck with what we were doing before (she's event fit but not eventing)...so a good 30mins on the pessoa and hacks for around 1-2 hours...everyday.
I havent schooled her for the 2months she has been showing these sypmtoms, partly because she is unschoolable (seems to grind to a halt, resesnt the leg, starts cow kicking, snaking her neck, ears back etc, refusing to move, especially when asked to canter)...I took her in the school today for the 1st time and put some fences up as she is far more motivated when she's jumping....She was brill for 30 mins....much more forward than ever before, looser in her trot and willing to a fence.....but then had one of her turns (as described above)...It's at this point that I dont know whether to stop or try and ride her through it.....and what is therefore, really meant by ensuring the EPSM horse is exercised...??
Does anyone have any suggestions to help me - I have left a mesage with my vet, but it'll prob be a few days before he comes back to me!
Help much appreciated and apologies for the waffle!!
Thanks
George
