... and useful tips on getting started gratefully received - I am so worried about my boy getting too fat on the diet - and about it blowing his brains (have just got him on an even keel with brewers yeast.....) please everyone let me know how yours are doing on 'the diet' thanks!

My mare hasn't got EPSM, but I am feeding her as if she has as she seemed to be intolerant to cereals in that she was nevy, itchy and always seemed to be hot. I put her on Dodson and Horrell ERS pellets which are oil based for horses that tie up or have EPSM, and she is a different horse! She has gone from joggy, pulling, napping, rubbing against everything to a calm ride (who can liven up in some situations), calm in the stable and no longer itching constantly. She has the ERS pellets to adlib level, with alfa A and hay.

Don't know if that helps any!

My boy has been on diet for a year now and he doesn't get fat. If your horse has EPSM the diet works wonders...the only draw back is that it can take months to get them to eat the feed!!!

You need to intoduce oil very gradually..(how heavy is your boy?). My guy is 640kg and gets 700ml a day on top of his alfa oil and fibre nuts (bribary feed!). He really has a fibre and oil diet only with a high vit e and selenium general supplement.

pm me if you want to chat. There are lots of ups and downs ahead but you will get there!

I went with the ERS pellets as I had a problem getting my mare to eat oil - she loves them. They are also supplemented with selenium and vitamin e. I have also used alfa oil to up the oil when I needed to put weight on my mare.

Hi
Sorry to hear about your boy having EPSM - was it diagnosed with a biopsy?
If you can give us a little more info about his diet, exercise/stable management routine, I'm sure some of us can give you more advice.

Hi, I keep my horse on a high oil high fibre diet as she used to tye up a few times and she is one of the calmest horses around - have no problem with the weight though she tends to be the opposite end rather too thin so I am grateful if she keeps it on - it should not send them loopy as the oil is slow release energy different from cereals. Only time my girl gets slightly loopy is when grass is fresh. Good luck with your horse,

Hiya

I took mine off alfa a oil cos he hated it, he is now on happy hoof (spillers) which is also a laminis feed, saracen releve, and falcon oat and barley free (where are you? I don't know if you would have a falcon feeds near you?) He only gets a handful of the two mixes for variety and then enough chaff to mix the oil into.
I had loads of problems getting him to eat initially but now he is fine and he is maybe a tiny bit fat but I am pregnant so not riding, if I was then he would look perfect
Good luck
xx

My horse was on a high oil diet and he was fine, i had no trouble with his weight.

I used to feed Alpha-a light, a feed balancer, soya oil and a Vit E and Selium suppliment!!

My horse gobbled the soya oil straight up but i know some horses dont like it.
