hi there,

my girlie has just been diognosed as having mild EPSM
crazy.gif

my vet has recommended taking her off all mollasas products, all cereals etc.

she is currently fed

1 big scoop of alfa-a oil
1 scoop soaked oats
1/2 scoop of herbal mix
garlic
glucosamine
vit e and selineum (she has had previous muscle problems)
a big glug of oil

twice a day

my problem is that she is just holding weight and condition on what she is on currently

please can all those with EPSM horses offer all sugestion on what i can feed that will substitute the caleries?
i will be upping the oil but i will have to do it slowly as she isnt all that keen.
she is not a fan of equi-jewl

also she has ad-lib hay at night

suggestions? im really worried that taking the oats and mix away is going to leave her dropping condition very fast, but obviouly they need to come out of her diet ASAP. i stopped the oats a few days ago and she is just getting reduced mix ATM.

HELP!!

I use Dodson and Horrel ERS pellets (ERS) and they really worked wonders on my mare who I struggled to put weight on. May be worth a look?

Good luck!

you can up the oil (to as much as 1ml per 1kg body weight and some feed even more) as you are already feeding the Vit E and selenium) if she is not doing so well but chances are that with ad lib hay and a fibre and oil rich diet you will see she is doing fine - mine does, she is a poor doer, TB in light work and I have found with her that no matter what I put in her feed bowl as long as she has access to hay at all times (or grass in the summer) she is doing fine - mine is on Alfa A Oil with high fibre nuts and lots of oil plus supplements.

Echo UKa, my 640kg horse has 700ml oil in alfa oil with a handful of fibre nuts to tempt him.

He is doing fab but took ages to accept the oil..spearmint comes in VERY handy and little by little.
There are lots of us on here so just shout if you need advice or simple reassurance. Diet change can really work, it has for my boy, good luck

not really, whatever is cheap and easy to get hold of. Just avoid linseed oil at these quantities as it can irritate the gut lining.
If she is getting fussy try spearmint but make sure you add the oil VERY gradually. I did 100ml increase per week and still had to drop back every now and then.

Oh and watch out for the slimy lips!!!
