A friend at the yard has given me a tub of epsom salts and i have no idea what i would need them for! She mentioned something about it having magnesium in which might chill my mare out a bit. Why are they generally used and if useful how much would i give her a day?

There are much better ways to give magnesium supplementation to your horse; Epsom Salts are likely to give her the squitts!

Hot tubbing with epsom salts is good for drawing out an abcess though.

If my horse starts to get a bit of lymphangitis ,I give him a small handfull in his feed to relax his gut. They were used in a bran mash after hunting when people gave such things and I still do!
