When i was at livery we had to worm at the same time using the same product, we did Equest/Pramox alternating.
However now my horses are due worming (I have left the livery yard) and if i use the opposite to last time it will be Pramox this time. I'm unsure however that this is correct and if not how is best to get on the correct routine?
Is it best to do Equest again now or wait a while til the correct time for Pramox? (or is it ok to Pramox them now?) currently kept on sole use land which is poo picked and rotated.

It's a Pramox time of year really.

But how long have you been using those products? Have you ever worm counted? It's not really recommended to use the same products over and over and over. You should rotate the brands.

Oh ok so its right anyway- Umm, not 100% sure tbh. certainly not year in year out though It was a fairly recent programme- YO used to just tell us what we had to worm with. It varied and i was never 100% sure she knew what she was on about really.
I thought that Equest and Pramox were the ones that no resistance could be formed with?

No i havent worm counted its certainly something i intend to do now its only my own horses and i can keep on top of the poo picking etc- just right now before christmas i'd rather know they are up to date and money is a bit tight tbh.

.

I have heard people say this, but I personally know of 2 horses that were wormed correctly with Pramox that had a worm burden show very shortly after (one was blood tested and tapeworm found, another had roundworm appearing before worming and then showed again within weeks and we had to Panacur which then got rid of them. And yet people always say Panacur has a resistance problem! hmmm....)

Most vets will have a recommended worming program. Why don't you give them a ring for advise?

Wrong

It's Equest in Summer and Winter
Pramox in Spring and Autumn

I even checked this with the ones I have.

Oh confusion!

Worming is something i worry constantly about! I guess the real problem is that people define the seasons differently? I call December Winter but some people still say Autumn!

I think it would be far clearer if the makers divided up their little pie diagram thingy into months rather than seasons avoiding this seemingly fairly common question!

I'd generally consider

March/April/May- Spring
June/July/August- Summer
September/October/November- Autumn
December/January/Febuary - Winter

I agree JessPickle, but I'd see it as end of the Autumn timescale

we worm Nov for tape, Feb for encyested Red worm then April for tape again. So to us we would worm now for tape with a Pramox type product

Vets and worming specialists happy with these times. We do this to coincide with field moves.

So if we were to worm this time of year it would be nearer the tape time than any other.

If you haven't wormed for tape since the spring, I would get a tape worm acting product

If you still think you should worm alternately with these two products then please reconsider. Of course the boxes say to do this. The manufacturers want to sell you their products. There are much better ways to run a good effective worming programme as has been said already by some contributions to this thread.

If we keep on using them then resistance will develop, it probably is starting already. If we don't keep moxidectin special, for winter encysted worms and known wormy horses then it will eventually not be there when we need it most. What will you worm your horse with if nothing can be relied upon to work?

Please, please start thinking and testing before you worm.
