Hi everyone,

First time posting on here so any help would be much appreciated! I am moving to glasgow for work and am looking to see what kind of equestrian activities are on offer & need advice on livery yards.

Which areas are an easy commute to quays/riverfront - where you can be close to a good livery yard with good facilities (arena, turnout, hacking?) Is there any hunting/riding club/endurance around?

Please help!

Thanks

I haven't lived up there for a number of years however Rowallen is a top class centre.http://www.rowallanac.co.uk/

If you are on Facebook Woodside Equestrian Centre has a page. They are in Prestwick which is a bit far away for you but if you get in touch with Lindsay Jeffrey she will be able to help you a bit more than I can.

There was another similar post a few months ago.
The river has several crossing points so you are not stuck, except by traffic jams.
Hunting, well its not a tradition round these parts.
Check out Ingliston [the Bishopton Ingliston], Muirmill and Rowallan for comps"
Endurance groups are best to North and East of Glasgow local groups organise "beach rides" [I am a cynic]
Gryffeside has the facilities you require, there is a waiting list.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies, much appreciated! Should mention that I will need full or at least part livery due to working full time etc - a few of these seem to be DIY only? Still I can always call and see if there is some flexibility.

Is Muirmill still going? Was a great place when John Brown was there! Last I heard it had been sold to some football club as a training ground! Muirmill was always very lucky for me and have some great memories from there!

I understand J Brown [disappeared] 's former groom has taken over, small comps taking place.

Muirmill is still going strong i go there as opposed to Rowallan now as its cheaper and a much friendlier environment!
Would recommend muirmill for shows and xc events :)

I used to do the derby schooling nights at muirmill with the fells ! Great fun. Busby does full livery but the turnout is pants. Indoor school etc though. Most places are DIY mind you.

Unfortunately you won't get livery at muirmill as the stables burnt down a week or so ago. The competition side is still running ok. However, if you remember it from johns days you will be shocked now. The current people have made huge steps forward from what they took on but compared to johns days its a bit of a mess. The beautiful 'international' grass arena is now a churned up grazing area!!

wardhouse doesn't do full livery :)
I personally don't think much of fordbanks grazing although it's handy for the motorway if your working at springfield quay.

did you say which area you're moving to?
there are a few places on the south side that do full livery.
hazelden will only take geldings and there's also Busy.

good luck with the move and let us know how you get on :)

Really good livery with loads of fancy facilities here
http://www.stewartonstables.com/home.htm (she's on here as thornhillstables :D) - I didnt even let my Arnie look inside - I didnt want him to get ideas above his station!

Only 25 minutes from the city centre.

I'm in Renfrewshire RC and they are a really friendly bunch - so are the crowd from Ayr RC :D

A shameless plug for the yard I keep my horse on: http://southburn.6te.net/index.html

They do full livery and take fantastic care of the horses. It's a really nice, well run, friendly yard with an outdoor arena, a small indoor arena, and a cross-country field. The hacking around it, I will admit, is just okay, but it's serviceable.

With the new M74 extension, it's pretty accessible from most parts of Glasgow. I live in the West End, near Glasgow Uni, and it takes me about 35 minutes to get there. If you were closer to the motorway, it would be a lot less, as about 15-20 minutes of that can be spent just getting to the motorway. It took me less time when I lived in Partick and could just nip through the Clyde Tunnel from my flat.

Re Muirmill, I thought it was just storage that burnt down not the stables?

Storage was burnt down along with all stables (all 22 horses were safely evacuated), damage to stables not as bad as it could have been because they are stone stables rather than wood.
Rowallan are offering livery, however as someone else posted they are very expensive for competing so i would assume that livery will probably be pricey as well.
Not from the area so not sure of other places, Ingliston offer livery and is an absolutley lovely place, again not sure of price (but with the facilities you get I wouldn't be surprised if it was rather pricey as well).

Loads and loads of great places in and around glasgow both livery and competition wise, all within 30 mins of city centre....what area are you looking at?

In Renfrewshire there is also Lawmarnock farm, Kilbarchan, where a lot of the Renfrewshire Riding Club stuff takes place.

I was sure that Wardhouse did livery. Is it just DIY now? Both are very nice.

Ingliston is stunning, and always has loads on - we are so lucky to have it close by.

Local hunt is great fun - highly recommended.

I would say Renfrewshire is a great area for both commuting to Glasgow and keeping a horse. Lots of stuff in North and East Ayrshire as well - including the beach!
