Everywhere I see 50% off here and 25% off there except with equine stuff. Gah why do they have to be so rubbish? Had the Derby House sale catalogue through and they are rubbish!

I looked at the Derby House one too and was really disappointed. Ive got a fair insight into how much things are at trade so the sort of sale prices we see in the shops are enough to cheese me right off.

I thought some of the saddles looked good prices but I cannot afford Amerigo let alone with £500 off. I want a sale that does Cavallo/pikeur/etc breeches for £50 and rugs for half price not just rubbish! I am probably asking for too much!

I bought some Cavallo breeches brand new for £30 once

was a closing down sale years ago, but they were £150 new

I tried to get some stuff from Robinsons sale on line but everything had sold out in mine/Oliver's size even though I went to the website as soon as the sale started. Did they ever really have anything in the sale? Complete waste of time in my opinion. I won't be going to the local tack shop sale either though as queueing for an hour just to get into the shop isn't my idea of fun. I'd rather spend more time riding and pay a bit more for things as and when I need them!

Considering we all seem to be rather savy on the internet since we are using this site....I suggest looking on ebay. You would be surprised what kind of deals you can get on there. New and used brand name equipment and rugs. I have gotten a bunch of rugs from ebay and some really nice tack.

bit of insight here as I have a little sideline selling Cavallos - that the good styles/materials cost nearly £100 trade, so shops cant really sell them for £50 unless they are really taking a big loss! You can get the cheaper Cavallo styles/material for around £65 now though but they dont last as long as the more expensive ones

Might be biased, but I do think you get what you pay for with makes like Cavallo. I've got ones that are 10 years old and still going strong - so on £ per wear, they are actually good value. worth looking on ebay though - quite a lot comes up on there for less than the trade price - not sure where they get them from!

Derby house start their sale in February, so everybody has time to get another pay day after the Xmas overspend. Have fallen out with them cos they are very rude and unhelpful now they have their posh new store

, but curiousity will probably get the better of me so will have a peek. Just in case.

My local Tack Shop has a genuine sale once a year where he reduces everything in the shop considerably, some things down to cost. He does this so he can have a good clearout & get the new styles, colours etc in & keep his shop stock fresh.

There's another shop I go to & he's got the same stuff hanging up in the shop from years ago, it's all so stale & old hat. He really needs a sale to clearout everything but he's just stubborn & won't do it.

If equestrian retailers sell at 50% off they will be selling at less than trade cost generally

The normal equestrian markup is 50% on trade cost

eg if an item is £10 trade, the shop will price it at £15 plus VAT = £17.63

At 50% off, they would be selling for £8.82 - that includes the dreaded VAT of £1.32 so they are getting £7.50 for a product which cost them £10 so a 25% loss

At 25% off, they would be selling for £13.22 - that includes the dreaded VAT of £1.97 so they are getting £11.25 for a product which cost them £10 so a 12.5% profit from which to pay their overheads eg rent, rates, insurance, credit card charges, staff etc

Few people are getting rich in equestrain retail!

Ok then will go a different tack (like the pun!)- recommended tack shops for bargains!
In Somerset the best is Pophams in Mark - you have to rummage like crazy but there is also some great bargains. My best are breeches for £15, rambo gilet for £25 and Toggi swater top for £10.

The joules clothing sale is actually pretty good. I just ordered a pair of their waterproof trousers for £15 when they should be £49. Its free p & p too. They had a quite a few nice things so might be worth a look.

What are you talking about

!? The staff at Derby House have always been rude and unhelpful!

Actually, to be fair, I find them much better in the new shop. There are still one or two with faces like kippers when you ask them something but most of the staff are very nice now.

Plus the new shop has the cafe which serves food from heaven! Their chunky chips are the best chips I've ever tasted. We always time our Derby House visits to coincide with lunch so we can eat in the cafe

Maybe things are better if you actually go there. Sadly I have found their customer service for online and over the phone customers has gone right down the pan. I used to use them for mail order a lot but have been caught out the last two times so just cannot bring myself to try again.

Probably true. I almost never use Derby House mail order... they're only fifteen minutes drive away so much easier to go in person. I almost always use Rideaway for mail order and their Customer Service is excellent.

Oh no, someone mentioned it on Soapbox, one visit to Joules online sale later and I've ended up with a lovely shirt with free post for £17!!
Whoops!!
