I have equilibrium turnout chaps and love them. They cover from the knees right down past the coronet band, over the hoof and heal. Even though my horse has taken some chunks out the neoprene they've protected his legs really well. They're great for keeping bad weather out and warmth in too
I do, but find that mud gets up them.... I have used them for a couple of years and really rate them for protection from knocks but much as I like the fact that they protect the coronet, I think i'll be replacing them with something that stops around the pastern if possible so that mud doesn't get trapped underneath.
I was considering the equi chaps for my mare because she will gets mud fewer in the colder months but when I read this than it make no sense to buy them
Most of the leg is protected... I have issues with it caking around the coronet and at the heal. I suppose it really depends on how muddy your fields get!
We've got the Shires ones (turnout socks I think they're called). They are absolutely brilliant and fairly cheap. My TB who destroys everything has worn his for 2 winters and a summer (butter cup rash protection!) and only a teeny nick out of them *madly touches wood*
I used the equichaps last winter and for mud fever prevention I really wouldn't recommend them at all... Very much agree that mud gets under them and they get very wet very quickly in damp weather, snow, mud etc. I found they got damaged quite easily as well, mine have torn in several places and they are used on a very quiet, old unshod pony. They are ok for protection in dry weather as they are thin so don't get too hot in summer but for this winter I have got a set of the premier equine ones and on initial comparison they are much more substantial (but still breathable) and the way they fasten under the fetlock means mud shouldn't get under them.
