Hi, id just like to ask you opinion on the turnout equi chaps?

Do they actually prevent mud fever? if the horse already has slight mud fever would it stop it getting worse?

Has anyone had any success/problems with them?
have they stayed on the horse whilst turned out?

seen some sportabac short turnout boots and thinking of getting them.

thanks

Hi,

I wouldn't put them on your horse while it still has mud fever... it provides somewhere warm to incubate the bacteria but I would use them when the mud fever has all gone as a preventative. I have some for both of my mares.

Ive got the Equi Chaps, but the stable ones (cant remember what they're called) which are very good. They're really hard wearing and dont slip. I know someone who has the Sportabac turnout boots and Ive noticed the horses leg can get pretty sweaty underneath..... so I personally wouldnt use them. I would probably try the equi ones.

I have equi chaps and sportabac version, The equi chaps are fantastic stay in place keep him clean and dry... Sportabac well im sorry i cannot seem to find anything good to say about them apart from they are ok till the rest of my equichap order arrives at the saddlery i spend more time recovering them from the field as they come off at the faintest sign of mud!!!!!

ok thanks, il have a looks at the equilibria ones.... just so expensive.. but isnt everything else horsey related!

was thinking it might make mud rash worse as its a snuggly moist place for more bacteria to grow but i didnt know

I dont know if he has actually got mud rash...theres no scabs or redness but hes got bald legs!

put the poor neddy back out today and il give him a good scrub later as he was really unhappy in his stable and i felt sooo mean keeping him in with it being so nice yesterday. he once again got his own back by opening all my bales of shavings with holes all over the place and pushing them all over

I can't recommend Equi Chaps highly enough - but make sure you get close contact chaps, not hardy chaps. Close contact chaps won't make the leg sweat up as they are made of stomatex pimply fabric. They are tough and stay in place, and they fit right under the heel bulb and keep the leg totally free of mud.

Hardy chaps are made by Equilibrium too, but they are nasty cheap things that slip and soak up the water - I have some on ebay if you want to buy them lol!!!

My horse had slight mud fever and using close contact chaps has kept it totally under control, it's all but gone now, but I'm keeping with the chaps as MF is rampant on our yard atm and I don't want my horse to have to stay in like so many of them.
