Equi Jewel - does it send them hyper??

Am thinking of starting my eventer on equi-jewel as he has dropped weight these last couple of weeks (which he always does at this time of year) and we are already shovelling hay in as fast as he can eat it. He does get other hard feed and a whack load of chaff too, but we are careful as to ingredients and quantities as he is susceptible to letting his mind explode if you aren't careful. It seems as though a lot of people like the EJ for weight gain benefits. So my question is, is it liable to send him hyper? Any info as to experiences with the EJ good or bad are welcomed!

Mine was fine on it and he was a sharp huge SF, you need very little, I just top dressed the normal feed with a cupful. Have you tried linseed?

Thanks Red-1 and AA, much appreciated. Glad to hear such positive responses. AA, to answer your question, no I haven't tried linseed purely because I always assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that that was something that was likely to send him a bit whizzy.

I have just put my Mare on luminance about 2 weeks ago. I know it isn't the same but is similar - I chose between the two. She is gaining weight nicely and hasn't gone nuts :)

Sent mine bonkers but he's very susceptible to reacting to feed! Weirdly he now has the falcon feeds rice bran, omega rice, & he's fine on that & it does keep weight on him. He's fine on linseed as well but copra was another culprit for causing explosive behaviour!

We had a hunter who despite adlib hay, turnout and good feeding (with linseed oil!) was losing his sparkle and started to look a bit down around the middle of the season. He was a sharp enough horse to ride so I didn't want to feed anything that would send him completely bonkers. I tried him on equi-jewel and it completely transformed him. He put condition on and got his shiny, glossy coat back. It was the only thing that I changed in his diet and routine.

I was torn between Baileys outshine and equi-jewel but after doing a bit of research I found the equi-jewel would be better suited to him. I love the stuff and it really piles on condition when you need it and doesn't send them crazy :) It's my go-to product now if I find they need a bit of a boost in winter :)

Thanks everyone for the responses, experiences and ideas so far. I will continue researching! I have put a call into Sarcen this morning but their nutritionalist hasn't yet got back to me.

I use it on my poor dooer. He has the saracens conditioning cubes as they already contain equijewel and an extra mug of equijewel. He's never looked better. I phoned the saracens helpline 6 months ago and it has genuinely made a difference to him. I don't have to add anything else, just cubes, equijewel and ad lib haylage and as much turnout as the weather allows. Saracens suggested including chaff to slow him down and aid chewing, but he never eats it so I stopped wasting my money. I don't add any supplements etc either.

There is a massive price difference between micronised linseed and equi Jewel which might be an influencing factor! I did have mine on equi Jewel and he was fine on it but he looks better on the linseed (fed with Alfa A oil, sugar beet and soak and condition). Mine is a big horse too.

My horse was tricky to get right and still maintain the perfect ride for the judge. I tried most feeds on the market but finally got it right with a very simple diet of Spillers conditioning nuts, speedibeet and equi jewel. The horse would never eat more than 2 or 3lb per meal and as I could only feed twice a day it was tricky to get the feed into him, but when I tried EJ he just bloomed.

It certainly puts a super skin on them.

Thanks for the subsequent replies, all of which have been duly noted! AA if EJ can get my lad looking half as good as your big fella then its money well spent in my view! Incidentally, is the person riding him the same chap that rides Ted nowadays?

It is, we are baby dressaging in the morning. Ted is plastered, his feathers are black, his mane like a bog brush and as for his tail. His clip has grown back in a mass of cat hair and he wouldn't let me trim his beard this evening. The big boy and Ted have nothing in common, Ted is just common !!
