Hi,

my TB is finaly starting to put on weight, but I think she needs something extra to help her.

She is currently fed twice a day (morning and evening) on:
2 1/2 scoops of alfa a oil, 1-ish scoop of soaked speedi beet, GP supplement, nettles, mint and seaweed. She has day time turn out on good quality grass and ad lib hay (will be haylage as of Monday) at night in her stable.

This feed regime has put on weight, but...
a) it takes her 1hr to eat (I have Uni lectures to go to so can't wait for her)
b) she can't be utilising all of the feed as it is in such a large quantity.

So.. I now need to lessen the amount of alfa a oil, up the oil, and add either:
Equi Jewel
Outshine
Blue Chip Origional or Pro

What do you think?

This is her 2 weeks ago:

you can feed up to 1kg of alfa oil per feed, i wouldnt be looking at changing this.

blue chip v equi jewel. blue chip contains all the required mins and vits EJ doesnt. thats how I would explaine the main difference, although the 2 are different in general.

personally I would be feeding.

1kg of AO x 3 a day (changed to 1.5kg twice a day if you can only do 2 feeds)
2x mugs of BC in each feed.

I would use water instead of beet . as it allows you to replace the volume with the AO.

never used outshine so can not comment on it.

just to add, I wouldnt be riding whilst lacking the topline/weight. id be doing a few 15 mins sessions of long reining including lots of walking over poles and if able leading off another horse on short hacks.

Well, first of all Blue Chip is an all round feed balancer so you should drop your current vitamin supplement if you go on to this. I've seen it work wonders on skinny TB's prone to going on hunger strike in the past.

Equi jewl and outshine are high oil weight gain supplements. In theory you could feed these along side the blue chip, which I would feed at manufacturers recommended dose. Some horses don't like the outshine, maybe same applies to equijewel as well, so before you spend loads on a sackful, maybe try a bit to see if she'll eat it first?

You could also try Top Spec feed balancer too, slightly cheaper than Blue Chip and it also gives very good results re weight gain.

Red has been on both Blue Chip Original, Topspec and Equijewel. Can't see much change with the equijewel at the moment which I feed alongside the BC. The BC has worked wonders for him and works out at the same price as feeding Baileys No4, bags last about a month :) Topspec did absoloutely nothing for Red but different feeds work for different horses, can't recommend Blue Chip highly enough ;)

I really like Outshine and thought it did wonders for Woody (mum's horse) so would recommend that. Blue chip is good stuff but didn't really see a difference in his condition. Woody is a hat rack with laminitis but he looked great on it.

IMHO she doesn't need any more weight, topline yes, weight NO

She needs good quality vits and minerals from a balancer to build muscle sure grow is the cheapest and bril stuff and good fitness work like hills, and stretching over her back

Your TB isn't underweight; she is desperately lacking topline and general muscle all over.

To address that the correct work is needed along with quality protein so don't reduce the Alfa A Oil as that is a prime source of quality protein along with anti-oxidants.

Personally would switch from speedibeet to Alfabeet - but just because it contains alfalfa no need to reduce the amount of Alfa A as these products are designed to be fed alongside each other. Alfabeet won't "hot her up" either if that is something you have to take into account.

Why not call the retraining of racehorses helpline; it is there to give plenty of helpful, constructive advice - and you won't be judged or patronised.

her feed is not too big as it only contains fibre. you dont have to worry about feeding 2kg or less in one sitting if it's all fibre as that's what they eat all day. my horses have feeds much bigger than 2kg provided there is no cereals present. the point of fibre is that it does take a long time to eat.
i would suggest a feed balancer like TopSpec. I dont think she needs Outshine/Equijewel as she does'nt need more fat, but she does need more muscle and TopSpec will help with the foundation stones for this. The rest will come with correct schooling and exercise.
