Hi everyone

I'm new on here so apologies if this subject has already recently been discussed!

I have a 16.2hh IDxTB who currently travels in a Bateson Ascot, but only with the middle partition removed. She's a great traveller just not so good at the loading bit!

I am considering getting a Show Treka L trailer and wondered if anyone could give me any reviews or opinions on their experience with one??

The reason I'm wanting to get one is because I now need to travel two (my daughter's pony) and obviously with my mare it is currently impossible.

I don't want to go down the lorry route as it's one more vehicle to tax/insure etc and I already have a decent 4WD that could tow an Equi-Trek.

Many thanks

We have an EquiTrek and I dont know how I can tell you about it. It is nice but it isn't very strong. Its 3 years old and always been barn stored and bits are about to fall off it and it always gets serviced and is very well looked after.
The other problem we realised (thank goodness it has never applied to us but...) if you have an accident and the trailer turns over you can't get the horses out because it has a side ramp and no rear ramp...jest something that is worth considering.

as a concept great. my TB won't entertain a normal trailer but loves the equitrek as does my friend's mare who falls over in a forward facing trailer. love having the living to get changed in/ sleep in. HOWEVER, build quality (i have found) is horrendous, had lots of things break (e.g. saddle racks), some things never worked (e.g. internal lights running off leisure battery i paid extra for) and some major breaks (e.g. axle- wheel fell off when i was doing 40mph down A road. trailer was about 6 months old at the time)

i could probably cope with this if the customer service was any good, i have found it to be awful. i was accused of driving dangerously and breaking my own wheel axle!!!! after doing some research on here have found lots of other people have had the same problem and received the same response from ET. what i would suggest is buy one through an independent dealer if you are going to get one- that way THEY will have to deal with ET should any problems arise...

thats a good point to consider, you dont want to think about overturning a trailer but yes how would you get your horses free if it was on its side???? could be a long time to get a breakdown co called out to right it ....????!!!!

I've never had any trouble with mine. It's easy to handle and i like mine very much. I have a Space L, which has a very large horse area. The Show treka L has a slightly shorter horse area because more space is used up for the living. My horse is a huge 17.2hh and he fits in my Equi-Trek more comfortably than he does in most lorries.

Scary thought about what would happen if it turned over. Although it would be horrific for any type of trailer to turn over. Not really sure in reality how easy it would be to get a rear facing trailer door open and then the horse would have to somehow slide out. I think in both cases the fire dept would have to be there to pull the horse out? Awful scenario.

I'm probably no use really on this one...

We started looking for a trailer/horse box a few months ago. I was considering one of the ETs, but when I started researching I found so many issues against them :(. Could cope with those if the customer service was any good, but it sounds awful, so we decided against.

Ended up buying an old, cheap three horse trailer and have been doing it up :D. It's solid, we'll know every bit of it by heart, and the peace of mind that will bring is immeasurable :D

My Show Trekka is about a year old, I use it at least once a week, if not 2/3 times. Tows great, pony travels well & the build quality is fine. Think the axle problems were with the older ones, & they are now using a different coach builder, I have had nothing break or fall off.

Ive always fancied one but Ive always thought the L size look like they are about to topple over, they sit on the wheels, rather than inbetween like traditional trailers. The concept is great, the build quality not so great.
I do know of one that did go over, ET said it was driver error, Apparantly she was going about 5 mph as she was pulling out at a junction, rumour has it she kerbed it but surely it should withstand mounting a kerb at 5mph???

Sounds as though she might have been towing with an illegally light vehicle. You have to have a very big 4x4 to tow one, which is why there're probably not as common as ifors and other trailers which are much lighter.

I sometimes wonder about how much of all the bad stuff that is written in forums is just rumour? Mine (which is now 9 months old) is really solid and I think it's better built and sturdier than the ifors that are parked up on the yard. It also gives a much smoother ride in the back for the horse than an ifor does.

It was a Discovery.
I do agree though that its mainly the bad things that you hear about anything not just Equitreks and for every bad thing there will be 1000's of very happy people too.

Sorry if I sound cynical, but my experience is that the reverse is more often true.People tend to think it is just them having a problem until someone publicly mentions it.This is not aimed as criticism of Equitreck as I have fairly limited experience of their trailers. Its more of an observation on human nature.

Disco's are mid sized SUVs and they are too light. I'm very sorry for your friend though, and hope there wasn't a horse inside when it happened. x

I always thought a disco was capable of towing the smaller Equitreks? Arent they capable of towing 3.5t. My Shoguns no chance then :(
It wasnt a friend, I just knew the attending vet as there was a horse inside. I dont know the outcome, just that they attended. x

I agree with most people ... the design is great, the build quality is cr**p. However, my horse does travel well in it so I keep it - but I am always rather glad to get back home safe and sound!!

Had mine for nearly 6 years and its fab. Maybe newer ones have prob, but mine has been fine the whole time. I have ShowTrekka L and have treked it up and down the country with no probs at all.

Discoveries can tow 3.5 tonne, which is the top end of that which cars can tow, so not a lightweight :D

It might be considered a lightweight if one is in America, having just come back from there and seeing some biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig beasties :D:eek::cool::D

i have a cheval liberte cos its lightweight and i had no choice in the matter but the showtreka sonds great i would love to get one
