its been suggested by my instructor to lunge using a training aid, having searched on web for pros and cons i'm even more confused...it does seem the equiami gets big thumbs up from people but what do you think?
I use a pessoa and that really helped my boy build topline and generally become more balanced but I did get my instructor to fit it and stand with me the first few times i used it to make sure I was doing it right
people seem to say they find the pessoa jabs in the mouth for every stride have you found this or must that be an incorrect fitting one? have you tried the equiami? thanks for opinions it all helps!
I really havent found that at all but i havent tried the equiami so dont know if thats better but i definately wouldnt use anything that even slightly jabbed my horse in the mouth. Do you know anyone that could lend one of these to u to see how u get on.
i prefer to long rein so i have control over the contact- i have found the pessoa can encourage the horse to sit just behind the contact so it is going in a pretty shape and will be building muscle but not as fast or well as a horse really working into the bridle
I'm going to be dull here, and say that if you don't know the differences between training aids, and don't know how to use them, then you have a problem!
If I were you, I'd go straight back to the instructor, and ask her which you should buy, and why, and book at least one lesson so she can show you what you are trying to achieve.

Hmm, well, that's not quite what happens. I do find that the pessoa WILL jab a horse quite violently in the mouth if he/she fools around a bit, bucking etc (therefore unfair on young horses) and it will shorten a big-moving horse's stride as he'll be catching himself in the mouth. YO is less enamoured of the pessoa than he used to be, claiming it put his youngsters on the forehand. He now prefers side reins.
Chambon every time, its the only thing that encourages the horse to put its head down and stretch its nose forward, all other aids severely restrict the horses reach and if used too tightly give the horse a nice sock in the mouth evry time he moves!
I prefer the equiami over the pessoa. The pessoa lets them sit on the forehand and they can twist in it. Whereas with the continuous loop of the equiami I find them much more even in rthe contact if I ride after lunging and they can't lean on it.
Kavalkade lunging aid. Very simple, encourages the horse to stretch and use it's back. Endorsed by Laura Bechtolsheimer. See video on Horse Hero website. Tried it on my baby and it has really taught him to reach into the contact.
Long reining or lunging over poles.
I am pretty anti gadget, what is the point on using all of these contraptions when there are kinder and less confusing alternatives?
I am not a fan of Pessoas as I find the horse is more likely to overbend then to engage his hind legs. Haven't used any of the other ones.
I prefer the chambon as it encourages the horse to lower its head and then for you to drive it forward. The pessoa I don't like because it activates on the mouth with each step. Also far more expensive and time consuming to fit than the chambon.

Check the video I mentioned - the kavalkade is not 'gadgety', the horse can lift it's head if it wants to and it is a really simple idea.
