I am feeding my horses Winergy Equilibrium Conditon but am starting to wonder about the cost of it for the amount I have to feed, so I have reduced the amount and now bulk it out with alfa a. In addition I feed 2 mugs of Baileys Outshine a day but have recently read some reviews on Saracen Equijewel that say this speeds up hoof growth. Is this true and if so would Outshine encourage the same growth? Does anyone know any benefits of feeding one over the other?

All quite expensive feeds, particularly the Winergy, so I'm not suprised your questioning the cost!

Outshine is soya and linseed, Equijewel is rice bran and Winergy is high-fibre, high-oil (grass and alfalfa I'm guessing?), and normally only one of Outshine or Equijewel would be fed as they have very similar purposes.

If you're wanting a high-fibre, high-oil feeding system then buying grass/alfalfa and adding micronised linseed meal and/or soya flakes would be a much more cost effective way to do so and also offers you more flexibility in the quantities you feed, as obv. the Winergy is pre-mixed.

For hoof growth, biotin is the key but works best when the horse is receiving the full quota of other vits + mins too.

I'm not sure about the pros and cons of each but I feed equijewel and have nothing but good to say. It has improved coat condition and helps with weight. I can't say I can really comment on hoof growth but one of mine has bad feet generally but since I've fed it I've had no problems. I have never fed outshine so can't say whether equijewel is better but IMO it has done nothing but good and well worth the cost.

Yes I am thinking about feeding alfa, maybe a balancer and a high oil supplement to almost 'make up' my own Winergy equilibrium at a fraction of the cost! That was what made me question the outshine over the equijewel as I am certainly pleased with the results of feeding outshine so far but the equijewel is slightly cheaper and as you say I think they do the same job

Ah that's interesting. I was reading somewhere that it has ingredients in it that aren't fully listed on the Saracen website, which doesn't help when you are trying to compare products. It's something to do with how they bind it all together apparently but thank you for that, i think I'll stick with the outshine.

Falcon feeds do a cheaper version of Equijewel called Omega Rice - I fed it to my horse over the winter and it really helped him keep weight on and he looked great.

Ok thank you, I'll have a look into that and perhaps do some ringing around tomorrow. Zoeshiloh I think you have a good point about the racing yards etc, I read that there were ingredients listed on the bag that weren't listed on the website so it does make it difficult to see what's really in it without actually buying a bag, but I haven't previously read there is anything not competition legal in it. Thank you everyone
