We have never had a problem with mud fever, but since we moved llast November we have had 3 of our horses suffer with it.

We have been looking at preventative options and wonder if the Close Contact Chaps by Equilibrium were any good for horses turned out 24/7 (no stables at the moment)?

These are the ones I am looking at:

If these are not any good for horses turned out 24/7, does anyone have any other suggestions? The fields are not that muddy- only at the gate ways and a couple of low ground places and they do not spend much time here really.

You can't use these 24hrs a day, I don't think there are any that you can. Also, if your horse already has mud fever it's recommended that you don't use them as the fresh air will never get to the scabs!!

I understand your predicament though - particularly as you have no stables! We used to slather on zinc & caster oil cream (about 50p from morrisons / boots) but we use the boots all the time now and don't have any problems.

I didn't find them to be that good

They slipped, and mud gets up inside them.

There are some others that people seem to like, but can't think of the name of them...

How about the creams/lotions instead?

I used to have a set but they were very fiddly to put on with cold winter hands. They also didn't really fit my flat footed thoroughbred. I sold them on ebay and got some Sportabac long turn out socks. These suited one horse but when I used them on the other (the day after she was shod) she came in with an over reach!
