I bought a 3kg tub of the Meta balance ages ago and it was lovely, a light green colour and smelled minty and quite nice.

Roll on a few months and im super happy with it as to how my horse and his feet are faring, however, I just bought a 5kg refill bag and it stinks, it smells really quite strongly unpleasant and is a really dark greeny almost brown soil-like colour.

I rang equimins to ask them if there had been a change in production or ingredients but she said no there hadn't been and that was that end if conversation. She said she hadn't seen any of the products as she worked in the office and therefore couldn't comment on colour/ smell of a product.

Just wondering if anyone else has found the meta balance to be inconsistent/ unpleasant smelling/ dark? Is it normally dark or light in colour?

My horse has started to leave parts of his buckets so I'm going to take him off it to see if its the MB.blooming typical when I buy enough to last him for the best part of the year i can't feed it to him :(

I'm guessing you've checked that it's in date? :)
If it smells bad, then it's probably not right. Also, horses tend not to want to eat things that are 'on the turn'.
I bought a bag of Fibergy once that was greasy, brownish and didn't smell the same as usual (fresh hay and mint is it's usual odour). Took it back to the shop I bought it from and they exchanged it straight away.

as I understand it Equimins changed the sourcing of one of the ingredients about 6 weeks ago, hence the different colour and smell. Mine have already been through 5kg of the different stuff with no problems. One of them was a bit fussy so I reduced the quantity and built it up gradually. There is nothing wrong with it it just smells a bit "fishy"
One of the ladies in the office wasn't aware of the change when I spoke to her a couple of weeks ago to order some more. When I ordered my first batch of the "different" stuff the lady I spoke to me warned me about the different colour and smell.

It's definitely in date, expires may 2014!

I've emailed equimins so hopefully they'll come back to me with some further advice. Paddy555 thanks for that, of they have changed the ingredients or supplier I'll feel better about it, I just couldnt understand how there could be such a disparity between 2 batches of the exact same product!

I noticed the latest batch I ordered had a stronger smell than previous batches, but I've had no issues with any of mine eating it. I too was told that they'd changed suppliers of one of the ingredients which accounted for the new smell.

Just thought I'd give a quick update to give credit where credit is due, I emailed equimins on Friday, Friday afternoon the MD rang me back to apologise for the fact their customer devices hadn't been super helpful, offered to send me a sample to compare my batch with a 'correct ' batch, the sample arrived Saturday morning and it is lighter, finer and smells nicer so equimins are going to send me a replacement bag. Very pleased with the response from the MD and their willingness to send me a replacement.

Oh I am really glad you posted this. I bought some for the first time, yes it is dark and smells fishy and my horse will not touch it. I just thought that was how it was and was cross I had wasted the moneyas he will eat pro hoof no problemwhich I bought last time.It is not a nice fishy smell like codlivine it is a stronger darker smell. I will ring them tomorrow.

Just posting to say that I rang equimins , and the manager rang me back. He said that a batch of meta balancer had been through a process to attempt to make it in pellet form , and then was ground up again. This affected its colour, smell and palatability and it mistakenly went on sale. He has replaced it for me and my horse is happy eating the replacement.
