Well now my gorgeous TB had his teggy teeth done this morning and afterwards the vet gave him a good going over. He has some muscles in spasm on his back where the back of the saddle sits
I am really annoyed by this as he only had the saddle checked very recently
Anyway - that is another subject all together.

The vet gave him some acupuncture and I am totally amazed.
The muscles twitched signficantly when the needles went in, and then the vet gave him some brutal looking stretches/cuddles. However, my horse was totally blissed out. Almost going to sleep on his shoulder and bottom lip flopping, ears flopping and everything ;) I have never seen my horse so relaxed and content.
I left feeling really happy with what had happened.
So I am having it done for him again in 6 weeks (and getting a different saddle fitter out to sort his brand new saddle out)

This is him blissed out:

Anyone else had it done? What did you think?

I've just had one of mine done, the result has been astonishing. His issue was buried deep in his back also at the back of the saddle, first session made him a little sore, second session made him very sound. He now strikes off on the correct lead in canter, something we have always struggled to achieve (14yo high milage exracer) and is better than he has been in a long time. I'm planning to have my other horse done for his neck/poll issues next.

Who is your vet?

He does look very relaxed! Acupuncture in underrated IMO.

I just want to add about saddles, I am sure you are not guilty of this but just mentioning as a little warning... I went to a saddlery talk a few years ago at holistic horse and it was very interesting t hear that many saddles are placed too far forward on the horses whither making the rider sit on the cantle rather than the centre. Moving it back just a smidgen often makes a huge difference. Give the 'rotation' of the shoulder an inch, not just the standing shoulder blade position. In your eyes this places the saddle further back, but in practice, it puts you perfectly in balance and the back of the panel will not dig into the horses back. :) I know, so simple but after I did this I never had any trouble again.

I was guilty of this!!! We always put the saddle too far forward way back when, now my saddler insists I put it much further back and it does work. Ffin has just has acupunture too, made me giggle to see his face. he was so chilled and it made such a difference.

That is really interesting thank you :) My lad is an ex point to pointer. He is 16 now and pointed until he was 14. He raced over 50 times in his career. I have trouble getting him to strike off on the correct lead when we are on the left rein.

Hopefully he will be a lot more comfortable now.

My vet is Donal O'Leary (sp?) from Heathfield Vets in East Sussex.

Thank you - that is great advice. I will see how we get on :)
