Im working on a very hughly exciting project (watch out for H&H give aways in the next few weeks for details!) and Im putting together a list or all human and equine therapies, fittness and health techniques that riders can use to edge the competitive advantage for an upcoming season.

So far I have;
Pilates
Yoga
Tai chi
Equine/human nutrition
Alexander technique
Bowen therapy
McTimoney
electrotherapy
interferential therapy
therapeutic ultrasound
Osteopathy
Physiotherapy
Corrective Farriery
gait analysis / biomechanics
(temperature sports therapy equine/human

Can you help add to this please?! Thankyou :)

I have never tried these and don't know whether they work, but how about Reiki and I don't know the proper name but the use of magnets and also the use of copper.

Wish you well with your project.
I work extensively with patients in the NHS who have long term health conditions- from heart disease through to arthritis and also anxiety and depression.

Many of these various therapies have no evidence base to them and I have seen people spend hundreds of pounds on unproven therapies with no long term benefit.

However what many of these therapies do is give people confidence and reassurance and have a very strong placebo effect, and there is nothing wrong with that. And I also suspect many aimed at the horse have no biological effect but again boost the riders confidence which in turn helps the horse.

So please in any list please distinguish between those with a good evidence base and those that people just find helpful and help with confidence.

Thanks, as an ex medical student im well aware of the evidence surrounding certain therapies.

Im actualy setting up a equine show aimed at helping competition riders prepare for the upcoming season. This is just focused on serious competion riders.

We have Jane Bartle-Wilson, Joe Whitaker and Piggy French doing clinics and the stands will not just be handing out advice but demonstrating methods and giving treatments on riders and their horses. We have a conference area with talks on many different areas and rings where riders can try out various techniques and methods and new tack.

Basicly im compliing this list as to have a taget list as who to invite to the show, riders can them make up their own minds as to the effectivness of treamnets and therapies. Im a firm beliver in the placebo effect and used the power of pschology most days in practice (when nhs policies allow!)

It's generally used as a treatment for illnesses such as PTSD and phobias within the NHS, however it is popular amongst certain sports as a way to enhance performance by combatting performance anxieties. There's lots of info on the net or pm me if you want any more info.

Merry mischief - can you please pm me with any links you have for EMDR for performance anxieties? I am qualified to practise it, but as I work for the NHS we can only really use it for PTSD. However I am starting some private work soon and this sounds interesting!

Rockafella what's your core therapy? I think there's quite a bit of stuff on shapiros website and I believe david blore has done some research? Ill look it up for you this week and send you some research once I'm back at work.

Merry mischief - I am a CBT therapist. EMDR has recently appeared as a NICE guideline so quite a few of our team have been trained up. As its the NHS we are restricted in how we use it, but I'd be interested in reading up on its other applications. Haven't heard of David blore, I will have a look and see what I can find.

hi - ive even heard that Aromatherapy can help people who are riders, it can stimulate the production of endorphins which leads people to ride with a more positive and happy dynamic which can dramatically impact the way a horse performs.

Can imagine EMDR would be really interesting for sports performance - especially where a conscious / subconscious traumatic memory or a psychological block / phobia is holding someone back. Know people in the fire service who use it to great effect to restore confidence and peace of mind after dealing with traumatic / frightening call outs. I'd certainly go to a session about its use in sport if I was at some kind of show / exhibition..

Cranial osteopathy? I know someone who does this to resolve behavioural and/or physical problems in horses. Can horses have acupuncture?

Thanks guy - lots of info flying about. Im going to push my luck now - what about other things you'd like to know about or try out to help improve preformance at a show?

currently we have masterclasses to join in or just watch. Farrier discussing balance, lamness limb issues etc, thermography, nutritional consultations for both rider (yes you are important as well!) and horse, saddler to check saddle balnace and if required reflock, bitting experts as well as lots of other things - anything else in particluar you'd like to know about or have the oppertunity to try out?

Oh, equine irridology is another one to mention in passing. And I don't believe anyone has mentioned good old contravercial homeopathy, now that's one to split the group! :D

If you're mentioning corrective farriery it would be good to see a representation of the barefoot trimming school of thought, you could do two birds with one stone and invite sarah braithwaite who competes in endurance, runs a micronutrient company and barefoot trimming.

Someone to update the conference on the updates from the scientific research community would be interesting :)

I also second NLP, I think it is essential for that to be there as a performance improving strategy for riders. And a look at the move towards coaching methods rather than instruction, although to the elite riders that will be old news, so it's up to you as to which rider group you are aiming for.

It all sounds very interesting, I don't tend to read the mag often so please drop me a pm with the details :)

Thanks to everyone that has contributed so far. Some therapies are well known and on my list, othe suggestions have opened my eyes, so looks to be great show with real variety! Give me a few days to contact the various associations/practioners, and if you are interested send me a PM and I will send you the details, website etc.

A huge thanks to IPC Media for supporting this show, they are running a competition in H&H for free tickets and Jane Bartle-Wilson master classes for us shortly, so keep an eye out for this -not sure if it will be in the magazine or online. In addional Horse magazine is currently concidering doing Joe Whitaker clinic giveaways and free tickets as well! If you want send me a pm and I will let you know when both of these will be so you dont miss out. A huge thanks to all.
