Hi - hope I can get some advice.

My loan horse has just been diagnosed with equine asthma. I have never heard of this before, and obviously will be talking to my vet about treatment (currently advising using an inhaler) so don't need a lot of info about the medical side, unless there is a tried and tested alternative, but am interested in information about management.

Will be changing him fom hay to haylage, although this causes concerns about weight management - he is a very good do-oer! Is there anything else I should think about. 24/7 turnout isn't an option, but he is on shavings not straw.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks in advance xx

Have a look at Pulmoease, phone the people that make it, I found them helpful and their product helped 2 ponies I was involved with.

This link may help you get a better understanding:)

It was known as Heaves in the really old days and has also been known as COPD. I think the old fashioned term "Wind Crack" is also another term:)

For a horse with breathing issues, hay should be steamed, which is NOT to be confused with soaking hay in water for metabolic horses. Steaming and soaking serve two different purposes.

It is easy and fairly cheap to make your own hay steamer, as opposed to paying a bazillion dollars for one on line. A lady on another forum built a hay steamer for under $100 U.S. , mostly with things she already had at home:)
