Equine Dental Technician - advice??

Hi

I am interested in becoming an equine dental technician. I know I have to go and do a degree in it to become qualified but I wondered is it easy to find work afterwards? As this would be a secon degree, so would like to know if its really hard to build a client base?

A friend of mine is going abroad (I think New Zealand) in September to do it and it takes 3 months. She already has a degree in something but this is not another degree and only takes 3 months. I believe you can do them in America too.

There is such a lack of dentists or good ones in East Anglia, I can't believe we are the only ones so I would say that you will get a good client base wherever you are, as long as you are good and patient with the horses!

slightly off subject my advice is first to check what the future situation is going to be for EDT's regarding the British Vet Association. My EDT was looking at coming out of it as its likely to get harder to practice as the vet association is making it harder for them to 'treat' horses. I could be way off mark but I thought the vet assoc was pushing to prevent EDT's doing work that wasn't a simple float.

Also she's noticed that more vets are training in equine dental work which is obviously preferable for clients who need sedation etc as they don't need to pay for a dentist and a vet to attend.

you do not have to do a degree to be qualified and in fact doing the degree still give you no recognised qualification,,,best advise is to go out with a few dentists and see if its really something you want to do,,there is heaps of different ways forward but unfortunatly not many here in the uk.....
