Hey guys,

it's my mare's one month anniversary with ME (: so i was thinking when would be a good time to get the dentist out. Did a 5 stage vetting a month ago but i don't know if that's enough to indicate that her teeth doesn't need to be done yet!I've no idea approximately how long before i should do her teeth cos I know it shd be done at least once a year but i've no idea when she last got it done (and the previous owner doesn't really want to be contacted after selling...)

advice appreciated as normal! (:

I think you are right to get her looked at by an equine dentist. The dentist will advise you on how often he needs to see her, depending on the state of her teeth.

I always get dentist, back lady and saddle fitter to check new ponies in first few weeks, also vet, if jabs aren't up to date. Don't forget worming programme. I treat as if have never been wormed before, to be on the safe side.

Sorry if I am coming accross as preaching.

This^^, always worth doing a full mot with new arrivals. My mare apparently had only just had her teeth done, nothing mentioned on vetting (though tbh unless they were truley terrible I wouldn't expect anything to be mentioned), but had the dentist out anyway to ensure we were off to a good start, and the poor girl had such a sore mouth from her teeth - ulcers around her back teeth too. Because of that I would always get everything checked out asap after arrival. Enables you to get off to the best possible start with your horse.
