Please help out with research into the causes of hoof abscesses. At the moment there is limited knowledge of the causes and with enough participants, this research could open the gate to a great deal of research on a condition which affects so many horses worldwide.

The link to the survey is below. It will only take a few minutes of your time but will help in advancing our knowledge. All horses both those that have and havent had abscesses are required for a thorough understanding.

Thank you for your help

Done! Some of the questions weren't really applicable for our pony, e.g. disciplines, she is retired (has Cushings) and there wasn't a box to tick to indicate this.

Can't do survey as am on a phone and half the answers are not visible and you can't submit it without answering all the questions.

Anyway can't really answer some as she is retired laminitis/cushings, not in work or shod. Has had loads (8 in 8 months) but never had any at all before.

Yeh that was the problem that I had some questions not relevant, I left a couple blank but it still let me submit the survey.

Done! Teddy presented with what appeared to be colic 2 days prior to abscess. I arrived at stables as usual at 6.30 am and he refused his feed, first time ever, and his flanks were twitching. Phoned vet as emergency as thought he was very ill, and lifeless. Teddy was 19 years old and one of our old ponies died of colic the year before, so was very concerned. Teddy had passed droppings, in stable.Vet took pulse, listened to gut etc, and was concerned that digestion had slowed but didn't think it was colic, was quite concerned thoughas he appeared really ill, pulse rate was up, he lokked very sorry for himself! I honestly thought this was it for him.

He was given anti-biotics in case it was some sort of infection, and given pain relief. 3 hours after vets visit he was eating and appeared back to normal. two days later he had a really nasty abscess in hind hoof. Spoke to vet, who thought Teddy must have been in a lot of pain hence, symptoms. He was never lame when abscess appeared.

Teddy has a low pain threshold, but it would appear that abscesses can be very painful, for some sensitive horses.
