Just to share some experiences
Over the last 2-3 years we have had spring and summer time RAO with our driving pony. We've spent a lot on inhalers, mostly Ventolin and the inhaled steroids such as beclometasone.
For the last couple of years we have been attempting to use the Equihaler. What we found was that the Ventolin was not that effective and the steroids were almost ineffective.
We bought an AeroMask recently. It was really expensive, about £320, a price that quite steep for what the product is. However that's just my opinion.
What's obvious is that the AeroMask is a far better delivery system - the Ventolin MDI is much more effective and we've gone back to using the inhaled steroids as a preventative and in the time we have been using them they've had some benefit.
It's a fait assumption that the AeroMask is ensuring a better delivery for the inhaled steroids than the EuqiHaler. Perhaps it is because it is easier to use than trying to use the puffer with one hand and restrain and hold an uncooperative pony's nostril closed with the other.
The AeroMask also comes with a wet nebuliser attachment that can be used with either simply isotonic saline or a Ventolin Nebule (2.5 or 5mg available). I bought a £45 Omron nebuliser off ebay and this works a treat. It's good to know that if things really get too wheezy there is the nebuliser to fall back on.
So lesson learned - should have listened to the vet the first time round and not tried to use the low cost, but effectively poor, solution.
