my horse has the above and i am very worried, although the vet said it should clear up in approx 10 days..?

Yes my big 17 hander had it. How bad is your neds case? Mine was mild to moderate. He had antibiotics, anti inflamms etc for it. Cold hosing, massaging and lots of walking in hand when it periodically re- flared up. If bad flare up he would have a half sachet of bute to help the inflamm to go down.

He had it in hocks and fetlocks too, on back legs only.

Once they have it, they tend to be prone to recurrence, but often milder. My chaps flare ups got milder and milder and now he only occasionally gets it a little in fetlocks occasionally.

Unless its very severe its one of those things that you can manage and it might well get less severe in time, so altho its horrid dont panic :-)))

Edited to add that the bigger the ned the more likely they are to get it, hence my MW hunter getting struck.

Hi, mine is a 16.1 Irish TB x, just one back leg is literally swollen twice the size, poor horse looks very poorly, he is on antibiotics for 5 days and 2 bute a day for 10 days, although the leg is really swollen he can still walk, my vet said in some cases the horse can get so lame they cant even walk, so the fact that mine can is hopeful

Is he turned out? Or do you have a walker? The lymph glands go 'stagnant' and movement is the only way to start shifting it again. In bad cases, it can be swollen like a tree trunk from the fetlock all the way up to the groin area.
I personally wouldn't cold hose...I'd be keeping it dry as I can and just keep him walking as much as you can. If you get any pus or serum seeping out, contact your vet again and seek their advice, as major scarring can be caused.

no i havent turned him out incase he gets kicked, plus he looks abit poorly to go out and although he can walk about, i doubt he would be comfortable running around if all the other horses galloped off. The vet said to walk him in hand every day

My 17.2 hh had it years ago. He couldn't walk forwards, only sideways like a crab!! Got the vet out and he gave me anti-biotics, and painkillers. He had to stay in and rest for a few days and luckily he recovered very quickly but it looked very painful!

The fact he can walk is excellent as it means you can do the gentle walking exercise which is the biggest thing in getting everything moving again.

My chap doesnt drink very much so we also added a tiny bit of salt to his water which made him drink much more water and that helped to flush the toxins through as well. Only half a teaspoon in the bucket but it did the trick.

Dont be downhearted tho, Marcus has only had it once in the last 4 years so they can def put it behind them :-)

BTW the cold hosing was recommended by head equine vet at RVC so reckon he prob knew his stuff :-)))

I'd turn him out if I could, more movement the better, do you have a school you could turn out in with a few haynets up around it?
We had to send ours down to the vets and had to be on the walker about 5 timesaday there to get his legs down to a stable level as there was nowhere suitable to turn out at ours. Was there for about 5-7 days and came back home fine and not had a re-occurance since with him.

We used to have a 16.1hh Hanni on our yard who had it, swelled up bad from the fetlock to the stifle but within a few days would go again.

One of our horses had this. It looks awful when the leg is so swollen doesn't it! The vet bandaged his leg and gave him antibiotics and we were told to keep his legs clean and dry. He was in on box rest for about 4 days, but was allowed to be walked in hand 1-2 times per day for up to 10 minutes at a time. It cleared up completely in just under a week, so I wouldn't worry too much - just follow the instructions given to you by your vet and you'll be fine!

My boy gets this every year or two. I used to have to get the vet every time for antibiotics and bute, but a few years ago I tried a homeopathic remedy and it did the trick! I now keep some handy in case he gets it, and along with cold hosing and gentle walking in hand it goes within a couple of days and he's back to normal.
