Any one have any information on EIPH on fit eventers? or just nosebleeeds in general. mine started to bleed a while ago although seems so random! Any one know or management ideas to help reduce?

Ellie suffers from the odd bleed every now and again. Always at rest, always relatively quick, always from one nostril. The first time she did it, we called the vet out straight away - he took bloods and checked her all over, but could find no cause. He advised us to put her on shavings (she was on straw) and to ensure that her hay was dampened, and that she was turned out for at least three hours a day. Even having done all this, she bled it a second time two weeks later, and so he came straight out again. He was worried that she may have some nasal tumours, or that there may be some worse, underlying problem, so he scoped her. Other than a little bit of excess mucus, he found no problem, and assured us that she may simply be one of those horses prone to bleed every now and again. We keep an eye on her - over the past two years, she has done it twice, but she is now back on straw with undampened hay, and it seems to have made no difference! Yours sounds similar, so I would say that there probably isnt any problem, but if you are remotely uncertain, get the vet out just to check the horse over fully.

He is on woodchip and always has soaked hay! He is also out from about 7 in the morning till 7/8 at night!

He was referred to Rossdales where he was scoped but they didn't come up with anything and the results were inconclusive! He has had them whilst competing, in the stable, in the field as well as during a lesson but never out on a fast hack or anything?!?!?

Your boy sounds like Ellie - there may be no answer! Sounds like you're doing everything right. If he's been scoped and checked out with no obvious problems, I'd say it's just one of those things - dont worry about it

This happened frequently to my friend's mare who has never been ridden. A cause was never found and she managed it with shavings, haylage and as much t/o as possible.

I've known a few -in fact I'm leaving shortly to take one into the vets to be scoped again.

First one didn't just bleed, he poured blood. They started as trickles after exercise so we didn't worry, then progressed to becoming heavier and at rest. He went it to be scoped, found a mass growing in his sinuses. Went to Newmarket, had a hole drilled in his head and the mass removed. While it was healing there were some horrific bleeds if he bashed his head (he was clumsy) but he healed fine and hasn't had one since I don't think.

Other one had a series of nosebleeds at rest about two years ago, not massive bleeds but blood did drip. Took her into the vets, had her scoped including gutteral pouches. Not cause could be found, even when we managed to trigger a bleed with the scope. She started again last week and has had three or four in a week and a half, so shes back to the vets this afternoon as they have no apparent cause or trigger so we want to ensure she isn't like the first horse.
