Equine Science path to equine veterinary?

I am considering doing equine science after I have finished school but am still unsure about the jobs available after completing the course and also where to go.
I have heard that you can get into veterinary, only for equines, through equine science, is this true and if so what course? What courses are there and which is the best/highest level?
I also heard that England is the best place to study equine science, especially at Leeds, Bristol and Hartpury(sp?). Do people agree on this or are there better/equally as good places?
I would be so grateful if anyone could help and reply? I have looked on websites etc and prospectus but they're not as helpful as people's own opinions and reviews. Thank you

no, there is no way to qualify as a purely equine vet. you have to train for the full 5 years and learn to treat small and farm animals too. then you could specialise afterwards.

Leeds don't do equine science. If they did, I would definately not be going to Nottingham to study it!

Sorry, I just heard that was good from my riding teacher, maybe it's a college in Leeds?! I am going to look into it as much as I can, to see what one is the best of the best?

I found the Equine Science course at Hartpury to be very good, very science-based and a lot of the lecturers are really into their fields. I don't think Bristol do Equine Science any more...? I'd say try and look for a course more linked to a uni such as Hartpury, or a uni itself, rather than a college. But it depends on the place. Warwickshire College is meant to be fairly good, as is Bishop Burton.
And I also thought that you could only qualify as a vet and then specialise.

Ok thanks. Yes I'd much prefer to go to a uni rather than a college. I will search up on the Bristol University but I googled it the other day and it came up with equine science. Looks like I will have to do a lot more work looking up on it. *sighs*

Maybe Askham Bryan? That's out York way. Pretty sure they don't do the degree though, just foundation courses.

Bristol have stopped their Equine Science course. Nottingham Trent do it, along with Aberwyswyth (sp).

i've just qualified as a vet. you cannot specialise until after you qualify. there is no way of training to become an equine vet. you have to do the whole 5yrs and learn about all species, then go into horses after. there are 7 vet schools - Bristol, Liverpool, Cambridge, London, Nottingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh. If you do an equine science degree 1st and get a 1st then you might get a place at a vet school after, although not all take many mature students and competition is tough - you also have to pay full fees for your 2nd degree which are around £12000 a yr!

I am at Hartpury at the moment doing Equine Science...its quite good but I wouldn't say it is massivly science based compared to some of the other Universities. Your best bet would be to apply for prospectus's (sp?) and see what each Equine Science course has to offer and pick the one which is best suited to you.

Oxford Brookes is highly recommended and you get lectures with the horsey lot which can mean they are v. sciency but thats why I went. Also it has a route to vet science due to the nature of the course (so i was told when I did it)
