equine science tips

Hey Im going into my 3rd year so have some experience with this :). Make sure youve includ. any info about veterinary experience, personal riding acheivements indicating commitment, horse related work experience esp stud/vet/nutrition,pc tests- showing competence with first aid etc. They like something different so if you can include any well known names ie nutritionists, specialised vets that youve worked with or shadowed write it in as it will make you stand out.Good luck!

What do you want to do with the degree? I have one, and to be honest I would look at another course unless you have a specific career in mind!

Ditto this!! I have one too, and have little use for it!! :o

It doesn't really put you in line for any particular job unless you can afford the time and money to do post-grad studies ie a masters and/or PGCE... a more specific degree like dentistry or business studies may be more use to you?

Also this!!!

However, I really enjoyed my course, and did learn a lot from it - so I have no regrets at all. I just don't work with horses now so it's pretty useless! But I did an extra sports psychology module in my final year, which was good and helps open up extra career paths. I have found my degree a good talking point though in interviews, and people always seem to be interested.

I should add my degree is in Animal science, which is broader, and gives more generally sciency background.

As per the previous posts, do you have a set career in mind?

I'm all for doing it if it interests you, that's what I did! But I found it a right pain to get work after I graduated. I had little work experience so went for entry level jobs (non-horse related), which I didn't get as I had a degree so they didn't think I'd stick around. Then went for horse jobs (like feed companies) who I didn't even get an interview for, assuming due to lack of work experience.

Either way (sorry, i know you asked for advice on your personal statement, NOT a career lecture!) I would say make sure you get some good work experience, either general or horse job specific. You'll thank me in 3/4 years time!

As for the personal statement, I would say if you have any horse career goals and interests, any work experience and then personal achievements. Don't forget to include non-horse interests too.
