I've taken to tying my horse directly to the rings because nylon baler twine does NOT snap and I stand more chance of getting my rope free from a metal ring than a plastic string if my horse panics. However, we're at a livery yard that insists on tying to twine - so was thinking of trying those plastic snap ties as a way of meeting them half way.

But I just checked these out and they're £6 - which would be bearable if you got a few, but it doesn't say! I'm not paying £6 for one, get stuffed :D

Does anyone know if you get more than one? Or do you know of any alternatives that are cheaper? Thanks!

If you tie to just a fee strands of twine it definatley breaks. I've tried all these things but my mare learns she can break them and then wanders off!

So I tie to twine but make sure it will break if she pulls back, which it has done many times!

I've never had issues with twine breaking if needed or undoing lead rope quick. A friend used to have those equipping things and horse constantly breaking it because it could so she went back to twine and just used the equi ping things in her horsebox.

I use Equi pings, the old design was pretty easy to snap off but now they have the safety sleeve things they're great :) my mares only managed to snap it open once when she got her leadrope round her neck while tied up and obviously panicked. I've found them great :)

I get no problems with twine, it's always snapped without problems but would never tie straight to a ring in my mind that's asking for problems. Split your twine in half and job done

I haven't tried the new equi ping but the old ones were useless!

As said above, I use nylon twine but make sure the lead rope only goes through a few threads.

It definitely works, before I got proper trailer ties our old pony spooked as I was putting him in the trailer....I'd just taken him in and tied him up and was going through the jockey door to put the back up when he met me coming out backwards. The string snapped fine.

I use the Velcro type ones, can't think what they're called but they're black with a little red tab on. Only problem is the other day I stupidly tied my mare up and tied the knot over the Velcro. She panicked (which she does regularly) and there was nothing I could do, couldn't untie the knot cos shed pulled it so tight, couldn't undo the Velcro cos the knot was over. Just had to pray something would break.....before her neck did. It was awful!

On another note some of the other stables have the equi pings and they work fine, brill thing about them they're reusable, others have the equities they do snap well under pressure but we've found once they've snapped off ones they are no good to be used agAin x

I've never had any problems using baling twine providing it's from small bail hay. Don't use the twine from the large bales as this is considerably thicker & will not break unless you remove some of the threads to thin it out.

I have used baler twine because yard insisted However first time I went to see my horse tied her up and she was spooked by the farm tractor and pulled back luckily snapping her lead rope. Scared me so i went and drove to the nearest tack store and got a lovely purple equi ping. Was told it was a newer design. Was £6 just for one but i use it everyday. I tie the ping to baler twine and then tie up. It has saved my horses head and neck and has saved me money on buying extra leadropes and new headcollars. man on my yard has cheaper ones which break a loyal easier. They are similar to these:

the guy has loads of these and practically gives them away because one time idiots on our yard tied horse to a plank of wood! Horse spooked and broke wood and then made itself mental because there was a plank of wood attached to the rope. The kind man tried to help and got trampled- broken ribs and punctured lungs.
Better safe that sorry

I also use the Equitie ones and like them

They are around £4 each or you can get a tub of five (see link in above post)

The new equipings are much, much better. I have a mk2 with the slidey thing, the mk3s should be even better than that. I also use the velcro things, they're pretty good and not too expensive either. I found the ties that look like miniature bungees don't work for horses that habitually try to escape by tugging on the rope. They're just not strong enough.

Baler twine is lots and lots of small strands twisted together, just untwist it and use as many strands as you need, 1 strand probably wouldn't hold a headcollar and leadrope weight. 5 or 6 strands would break with any presure from a horse.

It's free and easily replacible.

I've never had a problem with twine breaking. I use large bale twine and split it so is minimal strands. The lump proved it breaks too easily last week when she stepped back and it broke with no intention to break it... Will be a few more strands in future! I would never use the whole thickness of twine on then though and split small bale twine too.

I use cheap puppy collars. Thin crappy leather that will break if a horse really pulls but wil hold under normal use.

I use these - they were not cheap, but they can be clipped onto anything, used on existing rings, trailer rings, metal bars etc etc.
If the horse panics, they release the rope slowly, so they can reverse, and settle, and then they don't learn about pulling free - nor do they risk the string not breaking, or the potential for damage to the poll.

What are you guys doing with bale twine as have never ever had an issue with it not breaking. My horse breaks it for fun!

Twine from big heston bales is considerably thicker than small bale twine. I bought MK2 equiping with the sliding lock ring for my trailer, tied horse to it, he went to shove his head down to eat and it not only pinged apart it pinged through the air and vanished in the long grass!! Bang went £5.50, not impressed. :(

Best thing I've found is to use the quick release catches on the ring end of a rope to tie up with, that way when the horse pulls back you can release the catch and rope and still have hold of the rope attached to the horse.

I'm also looking for an alternative to baler twine, simply because my ponio likes to play with her rope nad flip it through the twine and twist it etc, so i end up with twine and rope all tangled togther in a mess and it takes ages to untie her so i'd like to get something that won't get tangled with the rope but will break easily too :)

Will never use equipings ever again, horse snapped her headcoller cutting her face the equiping didn't give one bit!
I always use twine from small bale hay, never had a problem.

I guess this is the problem, we only have large bales so the twine will be the strong stuff - didn't realise there was a difference! I tried just a few threads of it tonight and I still couldn't snap the damn stuff, so thanks all for the other suggestions!

ive just bought the velcro ones - think theyre called V Tie

i used the equitie ones and theyve always been ok... until my mare panicked a few weeks ago, the tie didnt come free and instead she pulled the tie ring and the wood it was attached to off the front of her stable :(

 How on earth did this happen? Equipings give really easily.

I like these too, they look good - and more affordable. Not sure I want to pay £6 for one bit of plastic I'll either lose outright or just spend all my time trying to remember where I put it..!

I'm sure I bought 5 Equipings for £25 which, with 2 horses, I thought was a good deal. I have 2 outside stables and 2 in lorry with a spare. That said for tying up outside lorry, I just split normal bailer twine in half and it gives about the same as an EquiPing.

The only annoying thing about the new EquiPings with the sleeve, is that when they 'Ping' the sleeve flies off and it's sometimes difficult to find it!
