Hello!

I'm soon going to breed my mare for the first time. It's also my first time breeding and I wanna pick the best match possible, but I don't want to take any risks —my mare comes before anything.

Her name is Siracusa de Olid (Huppydam des Horts x Poor Boy), you can look her up on HorseTelex and even watch videos of her on YouTube or ClipMyHorse. She's 14 now, but I'll be breeding her next year. She's 163cm tall and not too fine, but also not bulky. She maybe lacks a bit of strength, that's why she never jumped higher than 1,35m. She has a good comformation but sometimes has back problems so I'm looking for a horse with a great topline. She also has irregular hoof walls in the front legs from grazing with one hoof in front of the other one as a foal. She's hot, flexible, fast and incredibly good at shortcuts.

I've been looking for powerful and strong horses who meet my requirements (adding height, since I'm 1,77cm tall, power and strength, strong topline and hooves, health, rideability...) but also helps me keep my mare's qualities. I've recently found Ermitage Kalone who I think could be a great match. Except I'm worried that he might be too large-framed or big-boned for her to carry as a first time mom. What do you guys think?

I've also checked Arezzo VDL, Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve, Chacco Blue II and Grand Slam VDL. Most of them are smaller and might be safer options, but I'm afraid the offspring would be very small.

Thank you!

Eldorado vd Zeshoek and Glasgow van't Merelsnest are both tall, powerful types who could be good matches.
Dominator 2000 Z is known for adding height but I think his offspring can be a bit quirky.
Utamaro d'Ecaussines could be a good match but I'm not sure what height he throws, though is very scopey and powerful.
Emerald and some of his offspring like Escape Z or Jaguar Van De Berghoeve might be suitable too, though I think Escape might throw slightly smaller types

For a 15 year old maiden start as early in the season as you can- they can be tricky to get in foal. I had a foal born end of July because it took three rounds of frozen from a very fertile stallion. I ended up taking her to B&W to get in foal. I would never use frozen on an older maiden, having bred a few I have learned my lesson. Just to give some advice from someone who has done it before - LFG is good terms as well. I think if I ever did it again I would choose live cover only now

On that particular stallion - I only ever have had and bred Belgian horses and have a particular fondness of selle francais/French lined Belgian horses. My best and heart horse was Pachat II/Fleuri du Manoir. I went to Stal de Muze in Belgium and visited him when I bought another by him. Catoki the sire of Ermitage was a favourite of mine when I was jumping and breeding. It looks like he is only available frozen, and hand on heart for a 15 year old maiden - it can be very disappointing. If you do, just go straight to a good repro hospital, leave her there until she is in foal. Good luck

Good choice of stallion - decent family and well proven. You probably just need to dig a bit more and have a look at some auctions etc to see how big the foals and younger are coming out. Another stallion to maybe consider would be Baltic VDL. Seem to all be compact with very good topline.
