I have a tooth abcess, half my face looks like a melon, I'm in pain and off work, I'm also very, very bored - you can only watch so much gypsy weddings without crying with laughter and that hurts!!! I need to start saving for horse shopping at some point, so I thought I'd draw up a list of needs so I can look at all the shiny horsey stuff and stop myself from going nuts. I know roughly how much I want to spend on said horsey but have no idea what a basic kit checklist would be aside from tack , which may or may not come with said horsey. Obviously, by the time I'm in a position to buy a horse (last check on this was 2 years+) you'd hope I'd know this anyway but my tooth really hurts :( I'm sorry if I cause some unintentional shopping amongst the HHO masses.

snowballs and cream cakes all round (my diet for the last 2 days as they're soft and squishy,...) :D

Some of the gear you can start acquiring now to save you getting it when the horse arrives. Stuff like grooming kit, hi-viz tabbard for you, lunge line and whip, leadropes etc etc

Some of it you may not need depending upon the horse, or you may get included with the horse (Tack & Rugs), much of it you really need to wait untill you have the horse, know its size and where/how you will be keeping it. A shavings fork is pointless if you horse is at grass or on full livery or DIY on straw.

We have stocked up a half decent amount of stuff but will still need to buy shedloads when we find a horse.

Got my girl in October (soooooooooo excited, wanted a horse since I was a kid!), and think the lists above covers most of it off. Would add though - I had loads of stuff (first aid kit, treats, stable gloves etc) and nowhere to keep it - rapidly invested in a couple of those cheapy plastic storage boxes with lids to keep it in some semblance of order and hay (or worse from wheelbarrows going past!) out of it :D

And depending on where you are keeping it, some liverys ask you to bring your own mucking out tools, which along with a wheelbarrow can cost a small fortune

Oh both Derby House shops near us know us by name.
Think the list so far have covered everything.
Riding stuff for yourself.
If you have a private yard / yard at your house then you will need things to set up the whole stable / field / arena.
Buckets! LOTS of buckets!

I put the cart before the horse so to speak. Got the horse first, then tried to figure out what to buy. Luckily it was the middle of summer and YO has stuff to share. Indy and I have been very lucky where we are.
