Any recommendations? What's your favourite piece in your winter/wet weather wardrobe??

Got caught in a downpour at work today having started schooling in bright sunshine  by the time I had finished the yard, checked on my yearling and got to Tris, I was cold and miserable and had the soggiest knickers  so he got another day off. I'm not a fair weather rider generally, but I was just so cold and so wet, and the rest of his week is looking pretty busy!

Ideally I need some form of waterproof trousers that aren't going to be too slippery in the saddle, and a lightweight breathable jacket. I tend to get very hot and sweaty very quickly!

(I'm putting a bag of spare clothes in my boot)

Long raincoat, the sort that will go over the back of the saddle and attach to your legs to keep the them dry. Even better if the hood will go over your head with your hat on. I've got an old Shires Nevada which has done me for years. It lives up at the yard and every couple of years gets washed and reproofed.

ETA Faracat's Musto will be a much better quality version but is about 5 times the price.

My paramo coat 😍

100% waterproof even in extreme weather (used by mountain rescue) easy to wash. Hood big enough to go over my hat. Long enough to keep the rain off my bum and not sweaty or crinkley.

With decathlon waterproof jodhs or a pair of over trousers/full chaps/rain legs

I got a winter coat from Kramer last year which I’m really happy with.

Still on a quest for a pair of wellies that will fit my massive calves and not get destroyed within 6 months... I seem to have very pointy heels and rub holes in them all :(

I have the same heel problem and wear my socks out in weeks. A few years ago I discovered Bama Sokkets. Really reinforced heel area so might work well for wellies. £7.99 from Amazon.

I have a pair of Laura Garelli fleece lined waterproof breeches that I picked up on offer at YHL. Once you wriggle into them they are a lifesaver - warm and dry! Still on the hunt for a perfect coat...

Musto chaps, they are fleece lined so quite warm so I wear light or heavier jobs under depending on weather, usually Dublin with the silicon seat. Coat I like my musto canter long jacket, I can drape over saddle to avoid wet knickers. On the ground I like my stockman hat, keeps rain off head & shoulders

Dickies workers rubber jacket and overtrousers from the farm stores :) Unglamorous but keep me dry
The trousers are fine for riding in , if you get a big enough size so they don't pull tight on the bum, they are quiet and non slippery.

At this time of year, All year round, I wear a V-neck T-shirt under a long sleeved cotton or cotton-rich shirt (Dickies or Ralph Lauren Polo).

I sometimes wear a Barbour jacket over that, but I need to take it off after warming up, because I end up too warm. I'd be as wet from my sweat as from the rain.

When the weather starts to get cold, I'll keep the Barbour on.

I have a long, unlined drover-style coat that I've not yet tried for riding... that might get a trial in the late autumn.

I've got an old Shires Nevada which has done me for years. It lives up at the yard and every couple of years gets washed and reproofed.

That looks similar to my drover-style coat. I'm surprised at the price; I've seen them for around £50. I thought that there was an extra 50% tax on horsey stuff...

A couple of musto coats - I love my arena for riding in, i think any equestrian need to have a coat obsession which is uber useful in wet weather when you get soaked and one needs to dry!

I also have a musto training jacket with fleece which is good when the weather goes a bit colder.

Couple of pairs of cheap waterproof trousers, perfect for mucking out and travelling to shows in.

On the hunt for some musto full chaps! But coping with noble winter breeches

Decathlon waterproof jods are essential for winter but be careful if you wash them - the stitching on mine started to stretch after they were washed so they now leak through the seams .
I have millions of coats but I've still not found the 'one'.

It was in a sale and even cheaper when I bought it about 10 years ago. It's not going to be the same quality as Musto etc and if you wore it every day then you might need something better but I keep it at the yard and for days like yesterday I put it on when riding.

Decathlon waterproof jods have been a lifesaver. I gave in and bought some last week and haven't been wet in the heavy downpours we've been having this week

Love the Decathlon kipwarm. Have 2 pairs and pretty much live in them all winter!

I also bought a decent long Pikeur coat (heavily reduced in sale) a few years ago which is great - I am careful and regualrly rewash with Nikwax to reproof to help it last longer!

Eqco have started making riding skirts - not sure what they're like in relation to the waxed ones but UK based.

thankyou, I have seen them and think they are a great idea-some of the Scandinavian clothing manufacturers also make them. I ama bit of a hippy though and like the canvas ones best.

So.. long coat seems to be the general consensus. Something else to get the youngsters used to :D

They soon get used to it being another daft thing that humans do - just introduce it carefully as you would with anything else.

If you ride in windy weather or do lots of fast work be prepared to get soggy knees with a long coat as they can move back over your legs. If you can it may be worth investigating a pair of waterproof chaps and a hip-length coat for those situations (I have Dublin chaps and a Musto coat which have lasted for many years)

My son has the decathlon waterproof jodhs (as do all the PC under 10's) and they are brilliant.

Not a great look on adults (I tried a pair on once), but needs must, and all that lol....

Paired with a 3/4 length coat (Musto canter).

For an investment I would buy the best long Drizabone type coat that you can. I have a real Drizabone which I bought as new, secondhand, for £25, sadly it's massive on me but does the job. I also have a cheaper brand long wax coat I bought at YHL about 10 years ago, which is still fairly waterproof despite total neglect and lots and lots of use.
For a small budget I would look at your local workwear shop. They will have loads of outdoor jackets, and loads of waterproof hi viz, for a fraction of the price of equestrian stuff. It may not be stylish, but it does the job very well..
