We're just over the border in Hertfordshire and want to take our dogs on a beach walk - a quiet beach. We normally go to Suffolk or Norfolk which costs me about £60 in petrol so would like to find somewhere closer, ie Essex. Any ideas, please??

Mersea Island just near to Colchester would be nice. East Mersea would be best, it's much quieter. While you are there you can walk for miles at Friday Woods on the outskirts of Colchester. 12000 acres of army training ground, open to the public, woods, heathland etc. Marvellous.

Yes, Mersea Island, I went there a couple of years ago.

Hi! My friend, who lives north of Colchester, came to visit today with her Cockerpoo, Summer. She also rates Mersea so we may well be off there! Oenoke, your last photo, dog on the right hand side, is it a collie x golden retriever? It looks so like my friend's Yogi, who died very many years ago, but was the best dog ever - except for my current dogs that is, ha ha!

She's a pedigree Border Collie, just lilac and white.
