Does anyone know the success rate for Estrumate injections please? This is the injection a mare has if accidentally covered. The lady next door to the yard I'm at left an 18 month old colt in the field next to my mare and he broke through in the night and covered all 3 mares in the field. She has paid for the Estrumate but I now understand that it doesn't have a 100% success rate. It is critical that my mare isn't in foal as she is a rescue horse with severe ragwort poisoning. Prof Knottenbelt has advised that a foal would kill her. An internal scan could also cause serious problems as her blood clotting is compromised due to the liver damage. The only definitive answer seems to be a blood test but I don't think the colt's owner would pay for this and anyway, I'd rather not do that if Estrumate is eg 99.99% effective. Thanks.

From the Estrumate literature:

"Trial results have demonstrated that an abortion rate of 95% can be expected up to 4 1/2 months of gestation."

A blood test is less conclusive than a scan or palpation, and these do not generally cause internal damage/bleeding (unless a mistake is made, which is extremely rare).

Hope that helps.

Hi Rosebud. Might have been me. Angel had a night of illicit passion the very flipping day she came home from being backed! Infuriatingly, she came home a day early! So I've waited for the 3 weeks before she could have the injection. Injection now done. But the colt's owner's vet - cheerful b**ger - advised that the Estrumate was not 100% effective! I wasn't there at the time to grill him further on this and I feel bad about ringing my own vets for freebie advice! Angel simply cannot be allowed to have a foal as it would kill her. I was hoping Estrumate would have a success rate of 99.9% coz I'd happily accept that as done and dusted. Or if the success rate was only 85% say, I'd have to take it further. But 95%...feels like not one thing or the other. What do I do now? Internal scans ALSO have a tiny risk of causing internal bleeding and the sedation she'd need could cause a problem because she only has a tiny % of working liver. I think I'm just gonna throw myself under a bus. Easiest solution lol!
