Just wondering if others have had similar dilemmas?
My boys xc would benefit significantly from a seasons hunting which I could do FOC. The benefit can not be gained elsewhere before next event season. However, I have an issue with killing animals in the name of sport which kinda rules out the hunting (I think). I have spent many years (in the past) hunting so do know what its all about

I'm not after advice on what I should do, just wondered if anyone else had situations where there ambitions and ethics came in to conflict and which won out in the end?

As a 30yr+ veggie, I have faced similar situations. Firstly I hunted with the RA but they didnt really ever find anything, so it wasn't a problem!
Then I took to draghunting as it got pony out and about but without the nasty bit at the end. Always went home early cos it is fast and furious.
Now not an issue where I live cos there is no hunting in Scotland unless I'm prepared to travel at least 3 hrs.

Not much help - sorry

Ekkkk, big question. Highly debateable point here, notta lot of animal killing going on out hunting these days. I think you would be better to avoid this question altogether and get yourself signed up http://www.srcf.ucam.org/cudh/ and the job will be done. Good Luck.

p.s how did you get on at MKEC 3DE?

Not really competitive spirit, but i don't really like the idea of killing animals for sport but I think hunting is lots and lots of fun so I go anyway!

Why not just go blood hounding?? No chance of killing anything then.

Although there are none in my area, I would love to try hunting, but the whole animal thing does get in my way too. I don't honestly think I could bring myself to go as I know I couldn't stand it if i saw a kill and it would ruin my day and haunt me. I am a total softy, you are speaking to the girl who tried to resuscitate a baby rabbit after the yard jrt sported with it, then gave it a respectful buriel deep in the muck heap. RIP little bunny.

However, mock/drag hunting sounds fab!!

Cant go Blood hounds as cost prohibitive but would be the perfect solution. Normal I could do for free (long story I wont go in to).

I dont really need advice on ' go or not', just wondered if others had faced a similar clash of ethics and ambition and what they did.

If your against hunting dont go. To me its annoying when people go when they are against hunting just because they want a fun ride.

I'm a bit different to you in that I sit somewhere in the middle on the ethical side.
I've only been out proper hunting a couple of times and have mainly preferred in the past to go out with local bloodhounds. Those local bloodhounds now no longer exist and I have a 4yo that will really benefit from hunting this winter, so yes he will be going with the local hunt (and probably out with draghounds that are a bit further away too)

Ive been thinking about this too recently, as my mare would really benefit from going hunting, but I think I would cry if I saw a fox being killed... therefore, dont think I could do it, regardless of how much it would improve my mare. I was also talking to my mum about it who told me that i'd have to find my own transport if i wanted to go, as she would refuse to take me, or let my dad take me.

Drag hunting seems like the answer then, or blood hounds? I dont really know enough about it to understand the differences. Saw Jeremy Clarkson being chased in a car on top gear - that would suit me

Wench. There is a big difference between being against hunting and not being against hunting, but not liking the kill.

I am not against hunting and I don't support the law in banning it, but I personally do no wish to be involved in a kill. there is the dilemma, it's not a pro/con hunting debate!

Sorry, misread the question. Good luck what ever you decide to do for your horse.

not a lot of animal killing goes on nowadays! - in all my trips out hunting even BEFORE the ban, you are unlikely to see anything killed.

Drag hunting is all well and good but a lot faster and more sparodic, I prefer hunting a scent with a normal hunt the ride is much more fittening and better pace rather than start stop, pelt etc!!!

BaileyHoss... I was talking about people who are there for a "fun" ride... not necesairly meaning that was what OP was on about tho!

If youve spent many years in the past hunting, and know its right for your horse then were is the problem?
Esp considering its not "propper hunting" any more?
- I dont think of hunting as "sport" its necessary population control of vermin.
- I for one never watched on with glee when ever Charlie was caught, felt sad, almost (numeros sock lambs, rabs, guinea pigs etc as a child surcumbed to his cruel ways!)
I have enormous respect and admiration for all quary.
But considering our poor hounds never get to really really run anymore ????.....
Id say bloodhounding but if your not up for going with them then I think youve anwsered your question. - Your not going hunting.

Why does it annoy you so much?? surely if people pay their money, they can have what ever reasons they want to go!

Just wanted to add your "cometitive spirit" can't be that strong if you are not interested in going drag hunting/blood hounding just because you'd have to pay!!

i think its my fault you are in this dilema.... me and my big moeuth hey????? Dont agre too strongly with that now will you!!!...
GO GO GO!!!!!
I have yet to go Autumn hunting and ever see antyhing let alone kill it.
Most hunts have to be squeekey clean on the hunting thing as they are being watched and they know it.
Go on hound ex or on the hunt trail rides he needs it and so do you . From there you will both gain your trust in each other again over the sticks.
There is no ethics here really as its all drag hunting now anyway.

Not wanting to get into the for/against discussion - however.......you personally do not want to kill foxes, but I presume you will do what is best for your boys? No dilemma - you are not doing it because you want to,but because it is good for them. There are lots of things I would personally choose NOT to do,but put up with doing because it is for the greater good of child, husband, horses!!!!

I know you said no advice about go vs not go but do consider coming out with the Cambridge University Draghounds:-

www.cudh.net

There are a lot of meets in different parts of the country and they are a nice bunch and not very expensive - some might be near you? Our 'drag queen' is an old Fellow of Trinity College - he's very nippy for a 65 year old!

Im not comfortable about hunting either... I know full well both sides of the coin, and personally for me i cant justify it in my mind... so i dont go. It would be drag hunting for me.

i am not mad keen on the method in hunting but when i have had the sort of dilemma as per the OP then i make sure i find out the facts on both sides and the reason i still hunt if i need to is that no-one has come up with a better alternative, that ensures survival of the fittest and doesnt involve indescriminate slaughter (albeit in a more 'humane' way) on a much larger scale.

I made the decisison this year that because I have never hunted, I needed more experience jumping and galloping over different terrian and getting my horses confidence to improve our eventing. We went out on a hound ride with the blood hounds, it was wicked. My mother loved watching us and my crazy TB was not crazy silly he just loved it. We have done several Hunter trials since and my riding and his confidence has already improved. it also made me realise how tough he is and the fact he won't break like I think he will.
The only answer to you is Blood Hounds, pay and you'll love it.

You can go with bloodhounds or a drag, or trail hunting. There are hunts who really only do trail hunting, there is one near me, wich used to be a fox hunt, but the country is quite near the urban fringe and I think the followers reall prefer a trail, because they know they are not going upset anyone or get tangled up on a motorway.

Whereas I'm not 100% sure what some of the others do - they "hunt within the law" but not sure what exactly that means.
