Just noticed today that my newly barefoot (four weeks) gelding has what looks like very fine event lines on his front hooves. I can't feel any ridges as they feel smooth and to be honest they're barely noticeable. I'm sure they've just appeared as hadn't noticed them before. Would this be normal after front shoes being removed or could it be something more sinister. He's coping well so far no footyiness as yet since shoes were removed.

Yes, the hoof is a reflection of changes, in this case possibly more blood flow to the hoof as he is impacting directly on ground. Nothing sinister, sounds as though all is well!

Sorry to hi-jack, but just reading through a few posts and thought I'd add to this one. I noticed when looking at the pix I took yesterday that Saf also has these fine event lines - I didn't notice them at the time, the camera seems to have picked them up. She's had her shoes off just over 5 months here.

Those are normal, but look how the deviation to the right hand side (as we look at them) lines is reducing the longer she is barefoot :)

Ooh what does that mean?

That means that the feet were unbalanced, and the interior bones didn't match the angle of the exterior horn. That particular deviation predisposes to collateral ligament strain - you may have had a close shave there!! The straightening of the line means that the imbalance has corrected itself as a result of not having shoes on.

Your trimmer looks as if they have been taking off a lot of flare. If that line does not straighten up completely, then you might consider asking them to leave the flare alone, because sometimes deviation is there to balance a leg above it which is not quite straight.
