Our first BE90, and my first in 6yrs. Not a perfect day by any means, but lots to like and work with!

Dressage was a bit tense and unsettled for 35.5. He can do better, but we’ve also had much worse scores! Not sure why he was so unsettled today, maybe because we’ve started changing his way of going again recently and he’s still getting used to it? Not sure. Obedient though, didn’t break any canters and stayed inside the boards!

SJ he was absolutely jumping out of his skin! We still need to establish a more consistent rhythm but it was far more controlled than last week. Probably one of his best rounds to date until idiot jockey dropped the reins over the penultimate fence and had to circle. Oops ?

XC warmup was a bit spicy I have to admit ? he knew what was coming next and just wanted to get on with it. He jumped round fantastically, making it all feel very small. But he wasn’t very appreciative of directional input today. It’s definitely his biggest weakness. Meant we had a couple of “not presenting” circles and a runout (simply because I didn’t present him properly). Oh and it didn’t help that I lost my stick somewhere around fence 6 ?

He’s been a bit better the last few times, but one step forward two steps back and all that. He basically shoves his head down to pull the reins from you and falls through his shoulders. More work needed on that. It’s difficult to work on when he only does it competing though! I thought the Pelham was working well but maybe we need another rethink. We’ve got one more run to either test something new or see if he settles to it.

Despite all that, I had so much fun. I wasn’t sure 6yrs ago if I’d ever do another BE90 again, and I’ve just completed one and can’t wait to do it again! He didn’t struggle at all with the hilly course, despite the fact we’ve only really run on fairly flat ones before. We got into a much better rhythm in the second half of the course, and he completely aced a tricky table-corner combination that I was absolutely sh*****g myself about, especially once I’d walked it and seen the size of the corner and the angle of the turn ?

And most importantly, I’ve come home with a safe, happy, sound and confident horse ❤️ (photos to follow when they arrive!)
