I did bath and west at the weekend and during the dressage my boy was slipping all over the place. I only use one stud in each hind shoe and i think maybe they werent big enough! He was also slipping in front, he has quite floaty paces and isnt heavy across the ground but i was wondering if next season i should have holes put in his front shoes just for dressage?
What sort of studs do you use and how many? I am always reluctant to use big studs because i am worried about jarring him up. The ground was really good but the tracks in the dressage arenas were getting slippy.
Any advice gratefully received!!

I would definatley have stud holes in all 4 feet. I only have one in each foot and what sort of studs depends on the ground

We always use at least 1 in each shoe, generally 2 in each as a 'just in case'
You'd be suprised at how much difference even road studs or small pointies could make

Do you jump them in front studs too? I always understood they need to slide forward slightly on landing when jumping and studs would prevent this.
I am only riding at intro level at the mo but i know he can do a super dressage if the ground is right. If its slippy he tends to save himself and doesnt do such a good test.

We always have 4 studs in - 1 in each foot!
I would never jump without them either, can't stand it when they're slipping everywhere

Thanks Diane. I saw you go up to the sj in the distance and was hoping to find you when you finished to say hello. I seemed to keep missing you. Pepper looked great as usual. Shame i didnt get to say hello. Oh well, theres always next season, it just seems so far away! Good luck for your next events.

CCJ insists on two studs in each foot, her theory being just one unbalances the foot.
It does work too, they rarely slip , we travel in tiny road ones which keep the holes clear then change over at the event.
We use small pointy ones if the ground is good, bigger if it's not. Often the dressage arenas are more slippy than the XC !

i always have two small studs in each front foot, to keep them balanced. pointy if it's firm, square flatter small ones if not.
behind, it depends on the horse. some twist their foot as they take it off the ground, and for those i have one stud in the outside, to allow the twist. if they don't do that, they have two in each back shoe. either the same size as the front ones in good going, or slightly pointier in firm going, or bigger in deep going. i never use huge studs. if the going's really deep they'll get a purchase anyway, and if it's really hard, i usually don't run, or if i'm just doing the dressage, i use small very pointy studs.
