Has anyone had any experience of eventing after stifle injuries? The injury in question was a damaged miniscus on which surgery was carried out and the locking stifle operation too.

The vet thought a full recovery was on the cards but we are 8 months on and I am not convinced she will be eventing again this coming year.

I am currently hacking out (although not as much as I had hoped re weather) and trotting in the school but only large and big circles. I have had a canter on the right rein but am still unable to get left canter (which was due to the locking stifle). Not sure if this is now a schooling issue but I don't want to push it just yet or whether more fitness work is required to strengthen the stifle further.

Has anyone had any experiences of this?

I have just got a youngster to hopefully event next year as I can't afford a year out at my age ;) I just want my lovely brown pony back eventing :(

My girl damaged her menisicus - had surgery too - we managed one intro dressage test and then started more canter & she went lame again - unfortunate they also think she ruptured her cruciate ligament too as this can not be seen during surgery so we just hack out at walk now - hopefully will see about doing some gentle trot/canter in the summer of she's feeling ok but she's definitely not 100% sound but on no bute & loves her walk hacks around once a week :) she's only 13. Stifle injuries are awful - took 2 years to get mine properally diagnoses & then a rossdales trip who were fantastic

Our big beast tore the middle ligament in his stifle last may. After the prp, shockwave and walking in hand and hacking out. No school or circles for eight months at least and we have only just started introducing lunging 14 months after he did it.
You might just need to think.about taking longer to do school work.
If you do go in the school then just stick to walk and play about in that.

He will.be starting jumping in the next month. Lots if raised poles will help if you are stuck.to the.school.

Mine tore his cruciate aged 8. They diagnosed it during arthroscopy plus he had ocd lesions in both stifles. Sadly he never came sound after the surgery. He is ok on a surface but wouldn't pass a trot up. He is now 13 and mostly hacks with a bit of very low key schooling with his loaner.

My experience is of a mare who was kicked on the stifle, this chipped a bit of bone off the tibial tuberosity (the bumpy bit on the side of the knee) and this damaged at least one ligament seriously and others less seriously. In short, it was a bit of a mess. Vets attempted to treat it conservatively with rest on cross ties for 4 weeks but ended up operating to remove the chip.
She had 2.5 years off then, first had 6 months box rest, turned out for a year 24/7, had a foal (had colic surgery) then finally came back to event, but only at 100 when she had been a 2* horse. She copes basically with a slightly wonky stifle, but only up to a point, we don't do a lot of schooling with her, mainly hack her out and only jump when needed.

Here she is back out eventing again (you can see the scar on her stifle) with my youngest son, who always claims he just sits there and she does it:
