They take the penalties (so the marks you lost as a percentage) and multiply them by 1.5

thank you - if there are 3 judges is it the average of each set of penalties then?

Yep, I think so! I spent ages trying to work out the 1.5 thing last year and ended up asking on here too

Perhaps we need to clarify if the OP meant FEI or BE as they are not the same.
