does anyone else event there horses straight off the field? i have a novice eventer which i do this with, although i do get worried that maybe he's not had enough rest for the job in hand, with being out all night. although have to say his performance is spot on. he doesn't particually like staying in and i find him more settled and relaxed if kept out. am i worrying too much about the rest issue? would like other peoples view on this please.

I wouldnt worry too much.
Ive always evented my horses off grass, as Im never able to afford to compete and pay for hay/straw in the summer.

They seem to cope all very well, bar the odd one who has been rather difficult to get weight OFF lol

I wouldnt worry if they cope fine

Spider has to have rest as she can get porky! Being 3/4's warmblood.

But as Connor is completely underweight bless him

he will be out 24/7 on the grass and will compete off of the grass to (mainly because he is FILTHY in the stable!!)

One of mine lives out 24/7 365 days a year - well rugged when nec. He is far better and more relaxed this way I tried bringing him in for a while and he just boiled. Do what suits your horse.

mine is just like yours.
if he is performing just like you want him to then dont change anything
as long as he is happy
the only time mine stays in is the night before an event

Ours tend to event off the field , staying in the night before , apart from Chocolate who is in at night anyway or he stops eating altogether!
It helps prevent stiffness after an event too.
One horse gets fed at the comp before we drive home or it is so keen to get out it leaves the feed or gulps it down.
Can't see any reason why anyone can't event from the field unless it's winter or raining hard!

Mine lives out all year round. Surely they are fitter than stabled horses as they move around more rather than just stand still?

Yes, I've never even thought about doing anything otherwise! One of mine is also a novice eventer, they all live out 24/7 unless an event is very early the next day in which case I stable to keep him clean etc. I dont find he has anymore energy if he's been stabled, only a bit more spooky! I dont think it would help your boy, if he's used to being out and doesn't like being stabled then he'll only faff about in the stable all night anyway. I think they get most rest from whatever routine they're used to. Keeps them more supple being out, especially after an event - I'll always turn out into the field as soon as Im home so they can stretch etc.

On 1 yard I work for they have their 4 top horses living otu 24/7 and the other good ones out all night and a lot of the day. They don't get any food either! Much better!!!
