How often do you do canter work?

My boy will be doing his first pre novice of the season at the start of April and we are currently cantering (currently 1 - 1 1/2 miles, with a trot break halfway through) every 5 days. Was planning to up this to 1 1/2 - 2 miles. would you start cantering every 4 days?

Rest of the week he is jumped once. Flatwork twice. Hacking/hill work twice.

That should be fine. The average BE100 is around 2km with 17-20 jumping efforts.

I strongly believe that horses only have so many miles/jumping efforts in their legs before they break in some way. Can you introduce some hill work in trot to keep the distance and concussion down?

Yep, we do hacking/hill work twice a week which is mainly walk & trot.

Also, he is barefoot so hopefully concussion isn't so bad!

Just wasn't sure whether to do the canter work every 4 days?
