Hello,
wondering if i may pick some of your brains
i am writing a 5000 word essay for my Extended Project qualification ( like a mini dissertation). I am currently in year 13 (last year of A levels)

My EPQ's title is ' What is the biggest impact on horse and rider safety within Eventing?'

The main points so far include:
- quick history into the sport
- how safety has progressed so far, was planning to talk about frangible pins, air jackets ect, type of fences used and how that's progressing.
- common injuries in horses, I'm an aspiring vet student, so find this part the most interesting, will include fitness leading up to events and prep for events- there is quite a few scientific journals on this for me to use.
- common injuries in humans, relate again to the type of fall e.g. rotational, BE have a resource which contains and compares data about falls over a certain time period.

was wondering if anyone has anything else that i haven't thought of?, or just general comments- nothing is too small.
was also wondering whether anyone knows of anyone at BE i can get in contact with?

Thanks! any comments will be greatly appreciated. :)

You could add something on rider training. Also Minimum Eligibility Requirements have been introduced so that you have to have completed a number of events at one level before you can move up to the next level. You can find the details here

under rule book section c.
Good Luck with your project

Thankyou!
Both very helpful suggestions, thought I needed others opinions to bring other subjects to light. :)

I think what you are planning to cover is good but if you do your research I think you might find that you will need more than 5000 words to cover everything!

Might also be worth mentioning ground conditions / preparation, changes in hat and body protector standards.....eg move from chin strap to 3 point harness on hats.

Will let you know if I think of anything else.

Good luck.

Hi,

Looks really good, and pretty interesting stuff! Somewhere you might want to mention about how the ground conditions can vary throughout the season and see what impact this has on safety and injuries? And perhaps talk about how event organisers deal with this?

Will definitely give you something unique to talk about at uni interviews - I'm a first year vet atm x

Thankyou! I did think I would need more than 5000- but unfortunately that's my limit, was planning to write it and then cut down.

I didn't think of ground conditions- silly of me as it's a big factor!
Where are you studying, if you don't mind me asking?
Thankyou :)

Personally I would concentrate on less areas as you only have 5000 words which is actually very few once you get going. If you go with all you've suggested you won't do any of them justice. How about doing short bits on the things you mention and then the biggest section on what has had the biggest impact?

I'd also change the title to "What HAS the biggest impact....."

I'm at Liverpool.

I agree with everyone else in that 5000 isn't that many words.

Maybe use this thread to brainstorm, and pick a few of the factors you think make an impact to write about, looking at the results of each, so the injuries that may occur as a result of them etc etc. Then I suppose it can read more like an essay with a conclusion, rather than a survey? Just a suggestion, and I'm sure lots of people will come up with more good ideas. :)

I see what you mean, No point just skimming over the surface of each
subject- thanks for the alteration to the title too- oops!

The making it read more like an essay is a good point, as well as adding the injuries in as a result of the topic being talked about rather than having them as separate topics themselves.

Thankyou- again :)
