First question - does anybody else have to tie their reins in a not at the end?? Whilst XC schooling Mac I noticed the end of my reins was very long - he carries his head quite high therefore there is alot of excess rein! So have had to tie a knot at the end!!

Also what are those stirrup leather called that are very soft and flexible - they arent the ones that have clip ins and no excess - they are like leather ones but softer material, any ideas what they are??? and where I can get some??

Also where can I get a fluffy breast gith cover??? Have looked everywhere!!!
 
I use one of those knitted girth covers, that look like sports socks. I have cut holes in it for the neck straps.

We always tie a knot in the reins, it helps them to hang better.
I unbuckle the rein and do a single knot which I then wiggle back alnog over the buckle.

Do you mean rawhide leathers or the webbibg ones covered with soft leather. Rawhide stretch but are very strong. The webbing ones do not stretch, but get decent quality ones, the cheap shires ones do not soften up and are difficult to alter.

I know!!! Well im going to get a Devecoux (SP) 5point breastplate soon but in the mean time I have my breastplate and I have bought a breast girth! Thing is the breast girthis dark brown leather - im going to try and dye it but thought I could solve covering most of it with a fluffy breastgirth thingy!!

I like to look good!

Yes probably not the best thing to wear in this weather! Will probably sort it out to wear in April @ SOE - weather should be better!

And hoping to have a 5 point one by June I think!!

I tie a knot i my reins as a safety thing before XC but used to always have problems with them being too long and then me ending up nearly holding the leather bit at the end of the rubber (bit end). So....took them to a saddler who shortened the leather bit and it made them much better!!

Couldn't buy shorter reins overall as I needed to be able to slip them going down drops etc but at least can now hold onto rubber!

Thats the problem, you end up buying all this new kit and it gets ruined the first outing

Yes that is why I cant get shorted reins - because of coming down drops etc.

But I am almost on leather going XC on Mac too! Hopefully the knot will make them better - was much easier jumping in them yesterday!!

If you've got a good saddler ask him to make you some with more rubber less leather, most will and it doesn't cost that much! Knots are ok but not ideal.

Thought so!!! That is a nice course too I thought - one of the more technical/bigger Novice tracks I thought.
 
it was my first and we went clear so I love it, then went to some other novices and realised that actually it was a bit more technical than most but I think very kindly built so gives you the best chance. Never like the SJ there though!
 
Yes I went clear too! Nice course.

I know what you mean about the SJing - the warm up was awful - quite small and on a hill.
 
I too tie a knot in my reins the way Thistle described. Devoucoux do nice stirrup leathers that are nylon web covered with calfskin. Think they are about £80 a pair but mine havent stretched. If you want a Kolibri for June you will need to order it pretty soon, I ordered mine in mid January and was given a three month delivery time!
