Do you find that they don't make the time very well in xc?

I have a WB mare who is a superb jumper and does ok at dressage. She is mainly aimed at BSJA but I was wondering whether to have a go at PN (probs on a ticket)
She will jump anything but I have done a few hunter trials and we are way off the time.

I think she spends too much time jumping (ie really off her hocks).

Is it worth my having a go? Any tips to make her quicker? She's ok in jump offs because she turns quickly but she isn't too good at the speed classes!

At PN level anything can make the time so long as you dont waste it setting up on the approaches.

My horse is mostly warmblood and used to spend quite a lot of time in the air but they learn and she'd make the time easily if I ever got my act in gear and let the handbrake off!!

Practice makes perfect! Keep at the hunter trials but don't worry about getting the time initially, just aim to get around in a happy, comfortable rhythm.

If the slowness is just coming from her 'showjumping' the xc fences then the more hunter trials etc she does it is likely that she will get into the swing into the things and get more comfortable jumping out of a faster rhythm, but some horses just don't entirely 'get' xc.

Lots of warmbloods can and do make the time eventing, at PN its not too quick.

Thanks guys - hopefully she will get used to it. Trouble is I can't push her too much as then she gets it wrong coming into the fence - so yes, in effect she does showjump them! lol.

But I don't wan't to push her out of her natural rhythm and lose her confidence. Is it worth trying intro first or will that be a bit piddly? (she's jumping about 1.10 atm)

Intro and PN are exactly the same speed.

I think it just depends on the horse. My sisters Grade A KWPN and can make Intermediate times for example. I also had the biggest slowest Swedish warmblood ever, out and out bred for dressage and he could make PN/N but he would never have done intermediate.

Some WBs have a high influence of TB in them. My WB mare coped well with time at advanced and on steeplechase. It is interesting now that the breeding is available on BE website, there are a lot by WBs eventing.

So I think technique might be the answer! My mare does have quite a bit of blood in her but she's just got an SJ attitude - need to get her 'used' to xc. Perhaps I will continue the hunter trials and practice!

DD - Intro is the same time but fences are smaller so I feel less worried about pushing her into them, if you see what I mean!

I've got a KWPN 6 yr old mare and shes going Novice this year. I find because she has a big stride she covers the ground better than a short strided horse. She was 14th at the PAVO 5 year champs last year where the time was tight and she was well within the time which some of the top riders horses (TB types) struggled to make. I do think it depends on your WB but lots of galloping in open fields should help develop her gallop!

Id give it a go WB's are normally the ones with the dressage scores in the low 20's so with a double clear you will have a good chance

Def make the time

I got time penalties at a few last year all because he was young and I didnt wanna rush him, plus a couple of times he napped and reared halfway round and we still came home with only 1-2 time pens.
The def can gallop and jump
